I had a good second loop, but I ha d to really ru sh my las t loop ." And Moore wa sn 't th e on ly rider rushing on the last loop . Montesa's John Clark DNFed at Pennsylva nia with a strange back injury. The friendly'Alabaman pulled a muscle in his back while practicing the day before the event, but shook off the pain and opted to compete on Saturday. Clark cras hed hard in se ction 15 on the fi rst loop whe n his back gave way, and he decided to callit a day. "My legs just went numb all of a sudden,"said Clark. "They gave out under me while I was riding down a large rock, and I crashed pretty hard." Rain in the days prec ed ing 'the eve nt made the going. wet and s lippery. and after the first loop, all 14 sections were mUddy and slick. Warm temperatures and high humidity made things a bit miserable for theriders, . Scott Whitman the eighth-ranked Australian National rider, DNFed on the fi rst' loop after suffering a flat tire.
