Clark cras hed hard in se ction 15 on the fi rst loop whe n his back gave way, and he decided to callit a day. "My legs just went numb all of a sudden,"said Clark. "They gave out under me while I was riding down a large rock, and I crashed pretty hard." Rain in the days prec ed ing 'the eve nt made the going. wet and s lippery. and after the first loop, all 14 sections were mUddy and slick. Warm temperatures and high humidity made things a bit miserable for theriders, . Scott Whitman the eighth-ranked Australian National rider, DNFed on the fi rst' loop after suffering a flat tire.
