Section six presented riders with the
ne xt big challenge. Two five-foot vertical ledges greeted riders at the entrance,
and the sli my mud that covered each
step didn't make thin gs an y easier. The
exit was equally as tricky, as a long. vertical slick d irt embankment had riders
sea rchi ng in vai n for traction. Once
again, this section sh ut down most of
the riders on lap one, with the excepti on
of Peters and Moore.
Riders were trea ted to a worl d-class
section at the 11th stop, as the course
was laid out the same as it had been for
the '9 2 Wo rld Round . Ride rs were
directed up four seem ingly impos sible
waterfalls, and Aaron was the only rider
to survive the section on lap one.
But even with his three-point rid e in
section 11, Aaron foun d himself trailing
Young 19-20 after loop one. Home ride r
Peters was close behind with 26, while
Kempkes stayed in the hunt wi th 33.
A si n g le point aga in se p a ra te d
Young and Aaron after the second loop,
as Young turned in a 10, besting Aaron's
11. Peters improved his score with a 17,
but had effectively ended his chances of
a top two-finish. It was on loop two that
Kempkes was disqualified .
'The sections were good, but a little
too slimy for my style," said Kempkes.
"I got a flat in some sharp rocks, and
after tha t - well, I guess you know what
happened."
Young con tinued to up the an te on
the third and final lap by turning a low
eight-point loo p card. Aaron actually
falte red a bit , co mi ng home wi th 16.
Peters d id likewise, dropping 21. Hall sted had his best loop of the day with
26, while Moore seemed to tire and had
his worst - a 41.
Unlike the previou s round, no riders
inc urred tim e-p en al ty points and the
overa ll fin ishes were cu t a nd dried .
Young scored the win wi th 37, well better than Aaron 's 47.
"I really appreciat e th e specta tor s
and the people who are willing to help
at the sections," said Young. " It really
gives you something to ride for. The sections wer e just perfect for the power of
my 350 Gas Gas. I was 'usually able to
get traction when I needed it."
"Ryan rode well today," said Aaron,
ever gracious in defeat. "I should have
done a little better, but I sti ll ha ve the
best to look forward to. The upcoming
Rhode Island Nationals should be my
strongest of the year."
Peters was pleased with his thirdplace performance, and looks to ha ve
finally rega ined the form tha t earned his
third-place rankings in '93 and '94.
"I've had some trouble at the sta rt of
this year, but hopefully I ha ve th ings
so rted out," said Peters.
Moore wa s ecstatic about equaling
his career-best finish in fifth.
"I felt really good tod ay ," he said .
" My first loop wa s the bes t, and I ha d
some really good rides in some hard
sections . I still made some mistakes in
the easier sections, though."
