finis hing last. Rickar d sson jumped out .o f t he start first and Hancock was pushed to the back after going wide in the pits bend, allowing second reserve Peter Karlsson of Sweden to d ive through for third place . Hamill p roduced a stunning piece of action in hea t 19. Both Louis and Loram were worried abou t each other in the first tum and seemed to have forgotten about Ha mill. As the two Englishmen battled with each other in the first tum, Hamill spo tted his cha nce and h it the d irt to dive round both of them in a brilliant move and go on to win the race. In doing so, he sec ured a pl ace in Grand Prix heat 21 and the opportunity to take points in to the second Grand Pr ix in Wiener-Neustadt, Austria, on June 17, where he will start in the meeting. Rickardsson suffered a blow in heat 20 when he hit. the wall at speed while trying to pass Ermo lenko. The cu rrent World Champion was thrown from the fence and looked like a rag doll, but he recovered an d raced in heat 23. GRAND PRIX HEATS Heat 21 was the first of the runoffs to decide the final positions and Grand Prix points. Denmark's Jan Staechmann, who had experienced a night of misery until now, shot away from the start to win the heat and secure se ven Grand Pri x po ints. He got the better of Andy Sm ith while Hamill fini shed th ird for four Grand Prix points. Heat 22 spelled disappointment for Hancock who could only manage third place after challenging for second with Sledz. After such a bright start, Hancock was let down by his final placing. Heat 23 saw Rickardsson get the bet. ter of Ermolenko, who in tum worked hard to see off Gustafsson and Havelock. Hea t 24 determined the Grand Prix w inner, and most experts figured it would be Nielsen, who ga ted first and took both Loram and Louis wide. But Gollob s tayed on th e inside, and h is speed allowed him to roar clear of the . othe r three riders d o w n the back stra ig h t. It was a lead he would not relinquish as he went on to collect the Po lish Grand Prix victory and the first 20 Grand Pr ix points on offer for the winner of the race. Despite the thrilling triumph, Gollob was modest about his chances for the championship. "There is still a long way to go, but I think I have as good a chance as an ybod y, and I would li ke to thank m y wonderful supporters who were w ith me here tonight." 0 Wro claw Stad ium Wroclaw, Poland Res ults: May 20, 1995 Q UALIFYI NG HEATS .
