Brown ripped the start and wa s shad owed by Huffman, Pichon, Su zuki support rider Scott Sheak, Ferry and Brian Deegan. Lamson gated poorly, and comp leted lap one in 10th. Brown pulled away initially, but was slowly but sure ly reeled back in by the pack. Sheak was on fire, and the native New Yo r ke r b lew p a st a sur p rised Huffman in the mec ha nics' turn for second. O nce into second, She ak was no t satisfi ed a nd went o n to r un down Brown, making the pass o n la p three. Brown fought back, tho ug h, and reassumed the p oint in the ju m p section befo re the .finish line. Sheak d idn' t give u p, and repassed Bro wn momentarily on lap eig ht b efor e s low ing with mechanical woes. Wit h Sheak 's demise, Brown tho ught he'd have an easy time, bu t Ferry was the next to hound him for the w i n . The Suz uki ri d er sli ced through the pack an d ree led in Brown. The two bat tled for the lead to th e very end, swap ping po sitions several times. In the end , it wa s Brow n w ho prevailed and scored th e first Nationa l mo ta win of his career. " 1 thou ght I would do pretty good in the m ud , but n ot this good ," s a id Brown , ha ppy w ith his p er fo rm a nce . "A t the halfway point th e string broke o n m y Roll Offs a n d I had to chuck them, bu t w hen I d id, I sta rted to pull awa y . I go t a little nervous at th e end, but I just held on." A crashmidway through th e race saw Huffman drop as far back as seventh, but th e lanky Ca lifornian cha rged back up to thi rd befo re being passed by a ha rd -riding Lams on on the last lap . "1 was behind Swink early in the race and he fell in a rut," said Huffman. "Then I did exac tly the same thing. I got up and wo rked back up, but Lamson got me in the end . I had jus t lapped a Ho nda rider, so w he n I heard La mson a nd looked back, I thought it was sti ll the lapper. That kind of bu mmed me ou t, becau se if I had kn own it was him, I think I cou ld -have held him off." " 1 w as crui sing a t the s ta rt," said Lamso n. "1 didn' t wan t to risk crashing, so I got a good feel for the tra ck before I hamm ered it . I had a fe w real cl os e calls." Pichon crossed the fini sh line fifth , after running as high as ·third. "1 am not too happy with my rid ing, " he said . "1 go t very tired at the end of the race. Look at Huffman, he fell down and still caught me ." Kawasaki's Robbie Reynard worked up to sixth aft er botching the start, while Swink dropped to seventh after turning in an impressive pace earl y in the race. Greg Albertyn was fifth in race one , but DNFedthe second moto. H ughes fou nd himself at the back of the pack early on , but worked up to eighth. Ferry was glad to have drier cond itions in the second m oto, and pu t the traction to the ground best. Huffman was se co nd off the line , foll o w ed by Lamson, Pichon and Brown. Hughes crash ed hard i n th e fi rs t turn a n d remounted 40th . Righ t from the start, Ferry was out to prove his superiority, and pu lled out a comfortable lead over the rest . Behind h im , Huffman , Lam son and Pich on waged war over the runner-up position, wi th Pichon eventually gaining control. The Frenchman passed Huffman in the fast do wnhill whoop section on lap five, but was handed second when Lamson we nt down in the back section of the track on th at same lap. Lams on dro p ped to fifth beh in d Brown, and would stay there to the end . Pic hon, mea n wh ile, rod e like th e wi nd as he proceeded to reel in Ferry . On lap 11, the re cen tly crowned 12Scc Eastern Regional Supercross Cha mpion made the pass and to ok th e lead fo r good. "I was starting to ge t tired and was m aking a lot of mi st akes," said Ferry, gracious in moto defeat. "Pichon just flat out caught me. I about slid ou t in a corner and he go t past, but I knew th at I had the overall win." "That wa s much better ," said Picho n. " I got a go od s ta r t, a nd chased a fte r Huffman and Lam son.
