RaIl Waldmann (1:43.656); 3. Tetsu ya Ha rad a (1:44.032); 4. Pain or no pain, Doohan takes ole M ichael Doohan was on top before he crashed, was displaced shortly afterward, then came back the next day, eschewing painkillers and pulling a specially made glove onto a hand that was badly swollen and looked agonizingly painful, to seize control again, recording his fifth consecutive pole position. One can only wonder at his pain threshold. "It's hard to hold on to the bars, especially through! the chicane after the hairpin," he allowed. "My hand's a lot better than yesterday, with a lot more movement. I'll just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow, and try and go away with some points." Doubtless he would have been faster still but for the injury, giving his rivals double comfort. Not only were they relatively close to him, but his endurance was definitely open to question. Luca Cadalora slotted into second , half a second down, for a second successive race, using the production Michelins after testing some new Dunlops - a rear on Frida y and a. front on Saturday. "We went back to what we used at Jerez. They are really good tires, and we've been able to carry on making the bike better, " he said. Daryl Beattie was alongside, the Suzuki rider having regained direction after a bad race at Jerez and some puzzling results in the early practice sessions. He was third then too, but worried . Like most of the other riders he cut a second off his time Friday to Saturday, and ended up confident. "We were suffering different problems than at Jerez - not a lack of front-end grip this time, bu t a lack of feel and some harshness. We haven't changed geometry at all. but went back to some suspension parts we started the year with, and some that we 've tested , and it feels like a breakthrough. [ could do my time comfortably, and should be able to go faster in the race." Loris Capirossi completed the front row, for the third time in his first 500 season. The previous times he did it by following a friendly Doohan - this time was different. In fact he actually knocked Doohan off the provisional pole after the Australian' 5 crash, and then wen t faster on Saturday to stay on the front row . "I'm still only at about 85 percent of what the bike is capable of, but we have some good settings now and I'm really enjoying it:' he said. Another four tenths away came Loris Reggiani, equaling his best-yet qualifying position on the Aprilia, and just missing the front row as in Malaysia. Since he was still carrying hand and foot injuries from his heavy crash in Jerez , the threat was all the more real. Or was it just more proof that this is a rather unique track. "We had so much to test that I ran out of time for a fast lap:' he said . The next three Hondas were alongside: Shinichi Itoh, his hand a little bit better again; Alex Barros; and [erez-winner Alberto Puig, blaming the cold surface for grip problems. Alex Criville led row three, after crashing twice on the first day. Like almost everybody else he blamed the cold track surface. Cynics thought it might be more appropriate to blame the tires, or even rider error. But as Cadalora said: 'These are.extreme conditions. We always test in hot conditions whenever possible, and this is much colder than the usual racing tracks." Norifumi Abe was next, rather detuned after hitting a hare on Saturday and fully two seconds down on Drohan. Then tile privateers - Migliorati, Bosshard, Borja, Hodgso.n, .Haydon and McWilliams, in 1Mhat is developing into a strong secondary class WIthin a class. Sean Emmett was out after breaking his collarbone on day one in his second Lucky Strike Suzuki outing. Marcellino Lucchi, substituting for the injured Aprilia regular Locatelli, led the 250cc first untimed session, but it was Max Biaggi all the way after that, his machine now adorned with red and white numbers ("The only thing that is new"), and his armory impressive as he said: "This track is a lot like Malaysia." There he had run away with the race, as he was happy to remind his rivals. Ralf Waldmann was less than half a second down at his home track , though this was not much advantage since he last raced on it back in 1990, on a 125. "I only managed a lap at the fast time. If Max can go consistently, as it seems, I don 't think I can stay with him," he said. Third went to Tetsuya Harada, only in the closing minutes, after he had lost a whol e session on Saturday morning with gearbox trouble, again a victim of the one-bike rule. He was with the fast men but far from comfortable at a track where he was favorite to win, having fallen short of his tire-testing program. Jean-Michel Bayle made a little bit of history with his first front-row, slotting into fourth on the second works Aprilia ana denying that he'd got there by following anybody else. "We have the chassis and suspension very good now:' he said. When pressed to follow up on his earlier complaints of a lack of power, he smiled and said: "We now have enough." Tadayuki Okada led row two, but crashed again in the final session, this time breaking a toe. He is making up for lost time last year, when he didn't fall off once. Then came Lucchi, Jean-Philippe Ruggia and Carles Checa, another faller.
