CO, APR. 30 Yamaha-mounted Mar k Schellinger rode to victory in the rain-soaked Race of the Rockies at the opening rou nd of th e Mot orcycle Roadracing Association season held a t Seco nd Creek Raceway. The riders were pu t to the test on a tra ck that had some newly pa ved 5t!etions and a weath er forecast that called for a cool. windy, wet day. Tire and suspension setu ps had the riders and mecha nics busy trying to cope with the changing tra ck condi tions as well as keeping an eye to the sky for the rain that was su re to come. Th e round fea tu red a Race of the Rockies class that was open to any size or sty le of mot orcycle . At th e sta rt, Kawasaki ZX9 -mounted Ricky O rland o was away wi th a grea t launch. followed by Dennie Burke and TZ rider Aaro n Turner with Ma rk Sche lli nge r on his Yamaha FZR keeping close tabs on the front -runners. At the end of the first la p two-stroke ri der Do n Hough tried to outbrake Turner an d Schellinger going into tu rn nine and went d own, ca us ing the red flag to come ou t for a com plete restart of the 12-lap event. The riders were once again on the grid and when the flag wa s waved for the start Ricky Orlando, who was on rain tires , had a bad start and let Schellinger. Burke and John Hopperstad, rid ing hi s new Ducati 916 , jump o ut front. Schellinger had opted to use slicks and was try- ing to put as mu ch space between himself and the othe r rid ers as a light rain sta rted to fall five laps into the event. Orland o got by Hopperstad an d put his head d own to fly past Bur ke as the ra in sta rted. to co me do wn eve n h ard er. By la p eight Schelli nge r wa s sta rt ing to feel the press u re from behi nd as Orla ndo was now within striking range for the lead. Lap 10 had the two riders nose to ta il wi th Orlan do p utting a wheel up inside Schellinger coming to the entrance of tum nin e, trying to ge t the d rive to the flag for th e last la p .
