Ballard fastest at Marion County Motocross By Ky le Myers REDDIO<. n, MAY 7 Over 185 riders turned out for rou nd seven of the Florida Motocross Series at Motocross of Marion County where Suzuki rid er J.B. Ballard topped four motos - two each in the 80cc (12-13) and Super Mini classes - for two class wins. In the first Super Mini moto Ballard jumped ou t to an earl y lead with Oint Shealy, Kyle Farnell , Tim Bantle a nd Tom Parsons fo llo w ing closely. As the 17-rider field approached the first obs tacl e, Ballard mad e a miscue, and Farnell sa ile d by both Shea ly a nd Ballard to take the. lead. Farnell and Ballard then battled for the lead, as Jeremy Shuttleworth slipped by Parsons to move into fifth . Ballard followed Farnell for five laps before Farnell slid out on the last lap , to hand th e w in to Ball a rd . Farnell quickly remounted to fi nish second ahead of Shea ly, Bantle and Shuttleworth. Jon Boy Monk nabbed th e se co n d- m o te holeshot over Ballard, Sheal y, Bantle and Shuttleworth . Ballard on hi s Suz u ki West /Perfor mance Engineering-b a cked mach in e flew by Monk on the opening lap to take ove r the point position. Ballard added to his lead with each passing lap while Monk fell, letting Shealy , Bantle and Shuttleworth motor by. Ballard held on for the easy win ahead of Sheal y, Bantle , Shuttleworth and Monk. In the 80cc (12-13) division Ballard and Farnell battled during both mot os. In mot o one Farnell led the way with Ballard on his rear fender. Farnell and Ballard were wheel to wheel th e whole moto until Farn ell fell again and Ballard raced by for the win . The second moto saw Farnell again out front , but this time Ballard flew by on the tabletop to take over the po int position . Ballard pulled a few seco nds ah ead of Farn ell until Farnell hit anoth er rid er and wen t d own. Farnell did not finish the mot o as Ballard scored the moto a nd overall win. Rayborn III strikes at Thunderhill Road Race By Jacqueline Jouret wn.WWS, CA MAY 7 , Cal Rayborn III put his sta mp of authority on the new Th underhilI Raceway with a solid win in the firs t Braki ng Brake Systems Formu la Pacific Challenge to be held at the facility . Despite his unfam iliarity with the track, Rayborn JIJ put his Cycle Gear-backed Kawasaki out front on lap one and held off Rob Mesa's challenge to take a secon d consecutive win for the 1995 AFM season. While Rayborn JIJ and Mesa were pulling away from the field in their race for the lead , the rest of the fie ld we re engaged in a battle for third. After grabbing the holeshot on his GSXRl l OO Steve Rapp held on to the position until Chris Voelker, Sr. drafted past at the end of the straight. Rapp nea rly held off the advances of Joe Breit Williams, but Williams and his RC30 seemed perfectly suited to the track at Thunderhill. \\'iIIiams snagged fourth awa y from Rapp, but the less-experienced Rapp showed hi mse lf capable of stayin g with the leaders in the AFM's premier class . Jesse Broad way put in a terrifi c ride for third, well ahead of the res t of the field . Lone Star 200 Dual Sport a Trail Riders treat By Bob Windham NEW WAVERLY, "IXAPR. 22 -23 Th e Trail Riders of Houston ho sted the Lone Star 200 dual sport ride , the second eve nt of the 1995 AMA Suzuki National Trail Ride Series . The rider's course was compoSt."Ci of a mixture of trails and rural roads of East Texa5. Each day logged approximately 85 miles. The singletrack trails used were in the Raven District of the Sam Houston Nationa l Forest, a site com monly USl.>d. when The Caney Creek Enduro is run as part of the AMA National Enduro circuit. All riden; enjoyed the scenic roads and the dust-free trails that can be experienced during the rai ny seasons. Saturday's weather wa s nearly perfect although a light rai n in late afternoon signa led a change in the wea ther caused by an approaching . cold front. Ro n nie Lu nsford of Northwest Honda of Houston provided the lunch Saturday a t the popular Waverly House Restaurant in New Waverly . Gas stops for both days were provided by Dave Martin of Honda of Hou sto n. After Saturday's ride, Mark Hyde made the Suzuki suppo rt van available to heIp riders trou- bleshoot any problems and prep.,re bikes for the next day's rid e. With the cold front in pla ce, a strong, dry, north wind further improved condi tions on the tra ils but with a 20 degree drop in tem pe ralure, riders brought out their Enduro jack et s a nd made the most of it. Richard Sanders of Cycle Sha ck of Hou ston provided the barbecue lunch at the Stow -A-Way Marina on beaulifulLake Conroe. The Trail Riders of Hou st on would like to express appreciation to sponsors for door prizes and awards. Ranker roosts to Devils Ridge Motocross win By Jay and Sharon Hauser SANFORD, NC,MAY 7 The Devils Ridge facility in Sanfo rd p layc'll host for a two-day racing event under perfect r~dng co nd itio ns, a nd a yo ung ri der named Bobby Ranker turned in some hot results as well as a few head s. Ranker has been taking overall after overall aboa rd h is Suzuki of Winston-Sal em-backed RM80 in both the Senior Mini 8Scc 02-15) an d the Supermini classes of late, and he was ab le to turn the same trick again at this event. Ranker took both moto vidories in the 85cc 02-15) class by edging out another Suzuki piloted by Marty Pince, who gave a stro ng effort bu t just coul d not wo rk up enough speed and had to settle for seco nd in both motos. The final podium position was filled in by yet another Suzuki ridden by Nick Robert . Derick Bell was the first rider to break the Suzuki freight train as he posted a strong ride for the day and took a fourth over Honda mounted Barry Carpenter. Roberts and Bell came back to give their best shot at Ranker in the Super Mini division which met w ith the same results. Ranker wa s again u nbeatable as he waltzed to both moto wins. Ro ber ts scored the second s po t while Bell rounded out the top three. • Pro Action in the 125ee A class saw a set of competitive motos between Chad Newton and Brandon Turlington. Newton has just returned to racing Suzukis after a season on the green bikes and is clea rly more at home on the RM. Chad was able to take the overall win ahead of Turlington .
