It was the type of mud that grows as the wheels go round, and most bikes left the event site 50 pounds heavier. And ~ the mud wasn't bad enough, spec:tators made it even' tougher for the riders. Thinking that they were at the Blackwater 100, spec1atorsstood in front of the makeshift bridges, forcing riders to ride ttirough the deep mud holes. During a humorous riders' meeting , the co urse marshall offe red a five do llar reward for every spectator that the riders could take offthe course. He also warned of a fIVe-minute penalty for hitting a scor- . er , and joked that the sta rting ca nnon would be placed at strategic course-cutting locations.
