EVENTS··.. ..' · .' Edited by SCott Rousseau " :., AMAINATC National Championship Trials Series: Round 3 Leduc steady in San Diego By Donn Maeda Photo by Mark KariyaIDirt Rider SAN DIEGO, CA, APR. 29 orm er Championship class riders dominated the Expert class action at round three of the AMA /NATC National Championship Series, held in the McCain Valley OHV area of San Diego, and it was a home-state rider who came away with a narrow win. Suisun, California's Kenny Leduc emerged the overa ll winner, barely edging out surprise class entran t Ro n Commo Ir. Both Leduc and Commo started the year off in the Championship class, but both decided that the severity of the sections was not for them and petiti oned to move into the less-radical Expe rt class . Leduc fin ished 10th at the opening National in the Championship class, but competed as an Expert at round two, finishing second. Commo, on the other hand, competed in the first two rounds as a Championship cla ss rid er, and didn't make the switch to Expert until he had completed the first three sections at round three. "1 rode the Championship class lines in the first three sections today and about cr as hed my brains out," said Cornmo, a veteran of the National Championship Series. "1 had already decided that I would make the switch for next year, but the difficulty of today's sections made me reconsider." Commo was allowed to switch classes, but was given fives in the first three sections. Those 15 points would prove to be the deciding factor in the day's final outcome. Leduc ended the day with 38 points and 26 cleans, whi le Commo retu rned to the pits with 40 poin ts a nd 28 clea ns. Had it no t been for Commo's initia l three fives, the Cosmopolitan Mo tors rider would have scored the win . Still, the re was no denying the fine ride turned in by Leduc. The Gas Gas JT25 pilot was the only rider to clean sections six and 14 on each and every attempt. Another former Championship class competitor, Kipp Webb, nabbed third . "Animal" Webb amassed 53 points and 23 cleans aboard his Section One-sponsored Fantic Section. Local hero Jared Malmquist was fourth with 64 points and 21 deans. National SR40 Champion Keith Adams continued his reign of terror in the SR40 class, nabbing the win with an incredible nine-point score . Mark Oldar was second with 22, while Kent Graham held down third aboard his Aprilia Climber. Chiropractor Clive Hannon ad justed his balance well enough to hold down fourth, while Hawaii's Marvin Oshita made his long journey worthwhile by roun ding out the top five. ffl F (Abo ve) HawaII's Marvin Oshita fi nished fifth In the highly competitive SR40 class at McCain Valley. AHRMAIClassic Bike Magazine Dirt Track Series: Round 4 AHRMA thunders at Willow Springs HM By Fred Wind urn ROSAMOND, CA, APR. 29 hanks to co-promoters Eddie Mulder and Gary Davis, the sound of distant thunder was heard once again at Willow Springs International Racewa y during round four of the AHRMA /C1assic Bike Magazine Dirt Track Series. The weekend fea tured vintage half mile, TT and road racing along with classes for modem twins and singles as well. Dinosaurs started the night off on the banked half mile, giving the hardtail, brakeless machines the smoothest track to ru n on. Norm Newman led the start on his flathead Harley only to be passed by Triumph-mounted Gary Davis and AJS rider Art Carter. Davis pulled away w hile Carter's AJS sputtered and popped its way out of th e race. New'?= took second followed by three Indians ridd en by David Duvarney, Chades Koog and Steve Carter. The Senio r class was domina ted by the Triumph marqu e with Eddi e Mulder leading the feature wire to wire ahead of Mickey Alzola and John Kent. Gary Pettis' on a Bultaco and Honda rider Ralph Porzelt followed to the flag. The Classic 250cc feature was a true "Sprint'" race, led by two of the small, Italian-made Harley s, ridden by John Ap ple and Jim McMurren, who led from the start, bu t was challenged for the entire race by Apple. Ho nda, BSA and another Sprint finished the top five, ridden respectively (a nd respectably) by Tom Horton, Jack Ausmus and Joe Pape. Rusty Lowry launched his 350 Sprint into the lead of the Classic 500cc race but was dropped to fourth by the three Triumphs of Rick Rockhold, Davis and Chris Campos (who was later disqualified for using a non-stock frame) . Rockhold led Davis at the end ahead of Keith Johnson on a Beezer, Lowry and Sprint rid er Jay Johnson. Tom Horton took the lead early and for good in the Modern Vintage 250cc class, leaving Brian Coakley, Gary Davis and Art Ca rter to argue over second. Ca r ter and Davis could swoop inside Coakley in tu m two, but Coakley would go back by d own th e back st raight . Coakley finally took over second, Davis third , a nd Ca r te r dropped o ut with en g ine tr oubl e. Ji m McM u rren and James Keeler took fo u rth and fift h in that order. Mulder once agai n led the parade in the Mod em Vintage 7.5Occ race, heading Tom Horton, Ric k Rock ho ld , Scott Dunla vey and Ra y Comer. Toss in a T
