By Davey Coombs Photos by Kinney Jone s and Coombs SACRAMENTO, CA, MAY 7 n a p e rfe ct d ay fo r racing, Tea m Kaw as a ki' s M ike Kied ro w ski a nd Team Spi tFi re / Pro Circuit / Kaw asaki' s Ryan Hu ghes emerged fro m a pair of fierce bat tle s to claim the 250cc and 125cc overa ll wins, respectively, at the 27th annual Dirt Diggers Hangtown MX Classic. The 26-year-old Kiedrowski post ed 4-1 moto scores to beat out Yam aha' s Jeff Emig (1-4) on a tie breaker, while Hughes sco red th e third 125cc Nation al win of his caree r with a 1-3 score, edgi ng Suzu ki's Damon Huffman (2-2) based on po ints scored (45 to 44). " I had so me p roblems in th e- fi rst moto, but we d id so me th ings d ifferent I Ll) 0\ 0\ ....-I betw een m otos and it worked just perfectly in the seco nd race," said Kiedrowski, who ran and hid from the rest of the field in th e se con d 250cc moto. "I wa s just getting poi nts for the championship and not rea lly worried about the ove rall after I go t fou rth in the firs t mo to, but I'll take a win an yway I can get it!" Emig fin ish ed a car eer-hi gh second overall in the' 250cc class, w hile th reetime World Champion Gr eg A lbe rty n put in his bes t score of the sea son wi th third overall via a 2-6 tally. "There w as nothing 1 cou ld do at the en d of th e second m ot o but watch the battle up front ," sa id Hughes of the deci sive duel betw een Su zu ki team m ate Huffman and Tim Ferry. "I tried as ha rd as I could to catch those guys, but I was just too fa r back to be gin with. I was we t co n d itions, th e e ve n was mov ed , at th e request of the club, to the first weekend of May in the hopes that the weath er would not be too drastic either way. The club w as fortunate enough to get a warm, breezy day tha t brou ght out a crowd of close to 10,000 race fan s to witness th e second round of the 1995 AMA 125 /250cc National MX Championships. Thi s ye a r's co u rse w a s popular among the riders. Run in counterclockwise direction, th e long, fast track w as augmented with more than 100 load s of sa nd to so ften up the normally hard-pack ground . The resulting track w as still fast, but deep berms an d braking bumps were everywhe re, and the faces of the jumps w ere laced wi th ru ts. The mix complicated thin gs eno ugh to pu sh lap times up to around the 2:10 mark on what many riders felt w as the best Hangtown track in years.
