Two local tee nage mo tocrossers surprised the
seaso ned Expert hare scrambles competi tors in
t he AA class d u rin g round on e of the 1995
Arka nsa s Ha re Scrambles Series a t Lost Creek
Park, which drew 100 competitors to com pe te
on the six-mile coursc.
When the green flag dropped for the start of
the first wave, Tony Curti s and Brook Flu ker
raced up the pipeline start to the first tum into
the wood s. Curtis held a half bike-length adva ntage over Fluker. As the tw o entered the lefthander, the riders bumped and Flu'ker spun out
in the powder. While Fluker remounted, the rest
of the Expert field disa ppeared in to the woods.
Fourteen minu tes later , the AA Expert riders
returned to the checkpoint with Curtis holding
the lead while Eric Brewer followed. Several
unpredictable events occurred in the next two
hou rs. Curtis got stuck in a m udholc, Fluker got
strea me rs wrapped around his rear sp rocke t,
Brew er got ca ugh t behi nd a hu ge pil eup in a
mud bog, and all three fell down seve ral times.
As the time clock app roached one and a half
hours , the positions changed with Fluker takin g
ove r the lead from Brewe r after both ride rs had
passed Curtis ear lier. Jason Ennis bega n closing
on the lead ers an d ove rtook Flu ke r as Flu ker
slowed his pa ce in the back straightaway. The
Roger 's Cycles/ MSR-backed En nis, and Dunlop / MSR / Scott/ Sprocke t Specialis ts- back ed
Fluke r - both 17-ycar-old Expert motocrossers contin ued their fast pace w ith Ennis putting 50
second s on Fluker at the checkp oint before the
last lap. Enni s took home the win follow ed by
Fluker . Brewer, Rogers and Cu rtis finished third
thro ug h fifth, respectively.
