He was just relieved to have wo n anywher e aft er w hat was, for h im, an intermina ble losing streak "S ix months is w ay too lon g to go w itho ut win ning a race," sai d Schultz, whose most recen t victory had come in 199 4's pen u ltima te e ve n t, th e Sears Craftsman Nationals in Topeka, Kansas, on October 2. Phillips kn ew that to win ·this one he'd need a holeshotlike the one that had carried him in Hou ston. He got it, with a .044 to .061 ed ge, and maintained the lead until half track "I knew that I'd gotten out on him, and 1 didn't see him until we got about halfway down, " Phillips said, "But when we hit fifth gear, he sho t out from underme like a rocket 1knew it was all over:' At leas t the Winston points race isn't over. Phillips re mains within s triki ng distance of Schul tz, but he's still behind, an d Schultz is ju st getting a wi n ni ng combination together now . "We would have looked a lot better at this race if we hadn't lost those qualifyin g passes 'and if we'd had a few more runs on this eng ine," said Schultz. "This eng ine had nev er been in the bike until we got to the track, and it had only three d yn o pulls on it b efore th e rac e, so it sh ou ld be running better as the seaso n goes on. "When you make mist akes like the ones I made at the first two races of this season [he was late in the Hou ston final and redlighted at Ga ine sville] , it sticks with you. Terry Cu nning ham put his Nation al Enduro winn in g ex perie nce to work as he wo n the fina l round of the Mid-Sout h Winter Har e Scramble Series and clinched the championship on a rutted, slick and muddy cou rse in Western Kentu cky. In a wo rd "mud " would best sum up the conditions of the day. The rain sta rted at 10 a.m , and di dn't let up all day. The promo ters op ted to shor te n the cou rse from the original" seve n-an d-onehalf miles to five-an d-one-half miles in order to avoid a cou ple of water crossin gs. Also, to mak e th in gs worse, this cou rse was mostl y made u p of virgin tr ail s th at wou ld d eteri or at e qu ickly under the se slimy conditi ons . Cunningham came th rou gh firs t on his Yamaha at the end of the first of four soggy laps fo ll owed by earl y series p oints lead er, John Mas chino on h is KTM and Honda ' s Scott Sum mers in third. After checkin g out the course on the first lap, Summers turned it up a couple n otch es earl y in to th e second lap in a . charge that moved him to th e fro n t of the pack .
