The five ATA member clubs - Valley Observed Trials Enth us iasts, Technique Tr ia ls Club, San Di ego Tri a ls Riders, Plonkers Tri als Club and Sou thern California Trials Associ at ion - laid ou t all of the sec tio ns, which were built largely a round th e huge clusters of ca r -s iz e b ould e rs that d ominate th e McCai n Valley land scape. Said rock s we re laid out in a manner tha t se nt riders and bikes thrusting throug h the boundaries, often pullin g th e bike in to preca rio us positi on s, forcing the rid er to dab once, twice, even three or m ore tim es. Additionally, Section O ne Tria ls, im p orte rs of Fantic moto-trialers an d Cosmop olitan Motors, wh o import Beta, contribu ted certificates goo d for $1,500 di scounts toward the purchase of n ew b ike s. Al s o r affl ed off were litera lly thousands of do llars worth of mer chandise from many contributors and manufactu rers.ranging from helmets an d ridin g gear, to hea tin g th erm os ta ts an d cleaning p rodu ct s. Th is year's lu ck y winners we re Scott Ridgley of Sherman Oaks, California, w inn ing the Gas Gas trials bike, and Lloyd Trizley of Tallaha ssee, Florida, taking hom e the Montesa. The ATA reports that reven ues from EI Trial for 1995 are in excess of $6,000 - (Left) Former High School National Champion Matt Moore successfully tackled each of the exhibition sections and finis hed se venth overall. (Right) The hardest working ride r in the Championsh ip class was Dennis Sweeten . The tough Oregon rider was fifth. sections, du e to multipl e la cera tion s and bruis es su ffered in a m ajor trip over the bars in one of the early mornin g sections . N everthel ess, in true competitor' s fashion, Peters was seen in the exhibition sections watching, teaming and coach ing the other riders. The exh ibition sections generally consis ted of large drop-offs, steep, a lmost vertical slabs a n d tigh t turns, well limited to les s room to maneuver than the bi ke will allow. Section builders Matt Pritchard and Ma rtin Belair pu t thei r he ads together to create a mass of jumbled rocks an d slabs tha t under initial scru tiny, appeared unrideable. Most of them wound around the rocks in a tricky tech nical fashio n, while the most popular sections with the specta to rs .p roved to be those that saw the rid ers use brute forc e and high-revving engines to scale the huge obstacles. Cobos r od e w ith a maturity that defied his youthful appearance. Graceful under pressure and quite often very s u cces s fu l in hi s e ff o r t s, th e lank y Spaniard seemed to float over obstacles and huge steps that gave the other com petitors fits . Cobos, who weighs all of 120 pounds soaking wet, was good natured about his' talents and ap peared to enjoy himself, despite his lim ited ab ility to communicate with the appreciative crowd. Like Cobos, Americans Young an d Aaron had little trouble negotiating the sections, while lower-ranked competi- tor s like Montesa-m ounted John Clark of Huntsvill e, Alabama, a nd Gas Gas rid in g Matt Moore of Sapulpa, O kl ahoma, found some of th e traps to be tough going . Both M oore and C lark, wh o ar e among the youngest of the riders in the National Ch ampionship class, show tremendou s p o is e and g ra ce under pre ssu re. Fellow tee n Jess Kempkes, who won his first National event on Saturday, seems to be a cu t above , at lea st at th is ev e n t. Th e flamb o y ant Nebraskan didn't fare as well on Sunday, but this even t p aid no National points, so the rid ers com pe ted for little more than pride and a chanc e. to sho w off their skills. Perhaps the most spec tacula r o f the exhibition sections w as th e third trap . After scaling several stee p rock ledges, riders dropped back ont o the dirt and lined up for a tw o -story cl imb up a seemingly impossible rock wall. All of the Americans opted to scale the side of the wall, where ther e was a more gradual ascent leading to a six-foot vertica l step. Cobo s, on the othe r hand, held his bike wide op en an d powered stra ight up the face of the wall. Thou gh Cob os h ad dropped four p oints in th e morning p ortion of th e event, he went clean through all fou r aft ernoon sections and ended the day with four . Youn g, meanwhile, had bested Cobos in the early going wi th a tw opoint morning score, but the big exhibition sections claimed tw o dabs from the popular American. Thus, the two rid er s e n d e d in a tie, w h ic h w a s wo n b y Cobos' extra clea n. Th ird-placed Aa ro n topped off h is uneventful day with a spectac ular trip o v er th e b a r s on a re la t iv e ly easy en tra nce to exhibitio n-section five. As the tall, gangly Aaron was pitched over his bike, a groan arose from the crowd, in d ica ting th eir su p po rt a nd show of em pathy for his predi cament. Aaron wa s a little embarrasse d by his cro wd-wi tnessed faux pas, bu t he maintained his composure even after the fall, a n d continu ed h is wa y throu gh th e section. Also making an impact in a big way was G as Ga s te am ster M oore , who cleane d the difficul t last triple step of sec tio n five, only to la unch himself off th e s ide of the b ike as h e crossed th rough the finish cards . Moor e, who travels with his father, Craig, enjo ye d the event, displaying a maturity beyond his years. The p ressures and stres ses of b eing a N ational-caliber athl ete se em los t on Moore, w ho handles h imse lf with aplomb on the bike. Off the bike, h owever, Moore is jus t anothe r carefree 16-year-old . . Fo ll o w ing th e e ve n t, a s a t is fie d Young excla ime d, "The eve nt wa s ou ts tanding . I fee l gr eat about tying w ith Cobos on points. Sure, I' m d isappointed to lose by one clean, but I'm pleased that I was able to 'com pete on an almost eve n leve l wi th him ."
