Wind-blown Doohan on ole e p so l Honda ' s Mic k Doohan (right) kept his pol e qualifying record perfect in 1995, but strong winds in the second qualifying session prevented him from improving his time or lowering the track record set last year by the absent Kevin Schwantz. "Every time you 'd tum on the gas, especially in the fast turns, the winds want to push the bike wide," Doohan said after qu alifying w ith a best lap of one minute, 44.086 seconds (95.06 mph), around the 2.75-mil e track. Schwantz's lap record stood firm at 1:43.944, but that wasn't Doohan's worry. His was the rest of this year's field, bu t he had it well covered by 0.696-of-a-second, not a yawning margin, but a comfortable one nonetheless and one that would ha ve been greater if he'd found a clear track in the second session. Instead he came up on a backrn arker on a flying last lap and had to shut down and kill his time on wha t turned out to be his fastest lap of the session. "The race is alwa ys different from qualifying," Doohan continued. "We'll see w here we are in the race an d plan accordingly. We don't know what the other people will find ove rnig ht." The best of the "othe r people" was Spaniard Alberto Puig, the Fortuna Honda Pons rider improvin g his first-session time late in the second session after reverting back to the settings he'd used during w inter tests at the circuit in sou thern Spain. " Here it' s different because we' ve bee n training a lot her e and we know the track," said Puig, wh o is still looking for his first 500cc GP victory. One of the reasons he attributed his recent speed to, aside from circuit fam iliarity, wa s the realiza tio n that off-season surgery on his forearms was successful. The Spaniard had been troubled all of last year by his forearms pumping up and had an operation at the Mayo Clinic in Minneap olis during the winter. "I was really, really scared this winter. I didn't know wh at was going to happen. The first tw o races I was more concerned with my arms than going fast," he said . Going fast er was also on th e m ind o f thi rd fas tes t Luc a Cadalora, the Italian slo tting the Marlboro Roberts Yamaha among the Hondas on the front row and doing it with standard Michelin tires, front and rear. He 'd tested both the Michelins and the Dunlops, but found that with the Michelins he could feel a big difference with the front. "I can brak e later and I can brake and lean the bike into the corner. We had a big improvement," he said. He admitted, though, that it wouldn't be en ough to cause Doohan any worries. "Tomorrow we hav e not the chance to try for first place," Cadalora said, pessimistically. "We' re looking for second or third." R Less than O.02-of-a-second behind Cad alora came fellow Italian Loris Capirossi. Ca pirossi's fast lap was cou rtesy of Mick Dooh an, the sa me scenario he 'd used ea rlier in the yea r to imp rove his time. With abou t 15 minutes to go he came in, fitted new tires on the Ma rlboro Pileri Hon d a, and we nt for a quick lap. "U nfo rtu nately." he said, "I still cou ldn't find any front-runners so I decided to come back in. I wailed for Mick and wen t out behind him . "He taught me a lot on that lap . I could see the lines he was taking were perfect for the 500, alth ou gh they were very different from wh at I've got used to using on a 250," he added . "Loris, he's a good motorcycle racer," Doohan said . '1 can't teach him anything," though Capirossi would beg to differ. The second row was more of a grab bag, four brands represented with Lucky Strike Suzuki's Daryl Beattie, now the team's number-one rider , fifth fastest and fighting understeer problems. "Just like yest erday, we 're still chas ing the front end," the 24-year-old Australian said. "It lacks grip and it's making me run wide and basically I don't really know what's causing the problem. That makes it hard to solve, so with the race tomorrow we 'll ha ve to make the best of what we have. " Marlboro Roberts Yamaha's Norifumi Abe had much the same attitude when it came to tires. Like Cadalora, he'd gone back and forth between Michelin and Dunlop over the course of the weekend and ended up using Michelins at both ends in Saturday's qua lifying, though his fast time came with a Michelin front and Dunlop rear on Friday. "We kept the bike pretty much exactly the same as it was on Friday, though we d id also run a Michelin rear today," the 19-year-old Japanese rider said. Next on the grid was Brazilian Alex Barros, the Kanemoto Honda rider comfortabl e on a track where he' s gone well .before, though his results don't necessarily show it. Barros and team ow ner Erv Kanemoto ha ve been hamstrung fro m the beginning of the year by lack of pre-season testing and are just now getting up to speed . "We' ve been struggling a bit w ith the suspension here, plus the surface grip seemed worse tod ay," Barros said. Filling ou t the second row was the Aprilia 400 of Loris Reggiani on a track that's sy m pathetic to th e nimble-handling V-twin. The veteran Reggiani wasn't willing to blame anything other than himself and said that he was still a second off his winter testing time. "I'm still not happy at all," he said. "We were three-tenths quicker in that final session, but that wasn't enough. I have to say that I still think it is d own to me: [ can' t say that there is any thing very wrong with the bike." Ninth and tenth fastes t wer e the Rep sol Hondas of Alex Criville and Shinichi Itoh. Criville was down on acceleration - a very peculiar pr oblem for the NSR Honda - and Itoh was still suffering with a hand injury incurred at the Japanese GP. Team ROC Yamaha's Juan Borja was l l th with Briton Sean Emmett 12th fastest, filling in for Kevin Schwantz on the Lucky Strike Suzuki. The Americans in the field didn't have a good showing. Scott Gray was 27th fastest after crashing on the 12th lap of the second session and Padgett's Yamaha's Jimmy Filice only made five lap s in Saturday' 5 timed practice. The Californian had lost much of the mu scle in his legs following recent su rgery and was having trouble hanging onto the bike . "The bike's riding me right now," he said after qualifying 29th in the 3D-rider field, his better time in the more productive Friday session. ctl :::E 13
