LOOKING BACK
A smiling Hank Scott was featured on the cover 40 years ago for winning
the DuQuoin Mile. He finished ahead of Ricky Graham and Mike Kidd.
We also had an interview with Scott... Dutchman Wil Hartog won the
Finnish GP but Kenny Roberts stretched his lead over Randy Mamola in
the championship... George Holland was the big winner at the Minicycle
Championships at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch in Texas... Mike Bell locked
up the AMA Supercross Championship at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.

AUGUST 20, 1980
Dave Aldana was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago after
the rookie captured his second National win of the season at the Terre
Haute, Indiana, Half-Mile. Aldana out-dueled Jim Rice for the win... Gary
Nixon beat Yvon Duhamel at the AMA road race also at Terre Haute... We
reported that Husqvarna's Bengt Aberg won the 500cc World Motocross
Championship the Luxembourg GP, which featured a 200-yard section of
asphalt... JN Roberts captured another win in the California desert, this
time at the Adelanto European Scrambles.
It was 40 years ago that
Mike Bell clinched the
AMA Supercross title in
Philadelphia.
