handful of Yamaha bu cks, first-place trophies,
and valuab le Texas Series points at the second
roun d of the Texas MX Series, at Burleson MX
PaIk . He managed all this while doing battle in
the 80cc Open and 80cc Senio r (12-13) classes.' ,
Travi s Elliott waged WaI wi th Marley in the
80cc Open cla ss after Elliott scooped u p the
ho leshot. Mar ley moved in and raced side by
side with Elliott through the new whoop section,
over the tabletop, and into the next comer. Marley finally made his pass stick by diving to the
insid e line and out-accelerating Elliott out of the
tum.
But Elliott wasn't about to give up , and he
kept the pressure on Marle y for two more laps
until Marley crashed in th e wh o ops and
dropped to second. Elliott held on for the win,
while Marley recovered in time to salva ge second. Beau Boynton held down third across the
finish line, while Chase Reed and Scotty Trimble
followed in fourth and fifth. respectively.
Elliott. once again. jammed into th e early
lead in the secon d rnoto, and Marley and Trimble weren't far behind . Marle y's adrenaline was
pumpi ng , as h e sa iled past Elliott over th e
K-Mart jum p and snagged the lead. Elliott,
again. clung to Marley's rear fend er as they
powered away from the rest of the class. Marle y
charged hard bu t could never p ull awa y from
Elliott eve n as they zigzagged thr ou gh slower
traffic. Marley hung tough to take the checkered
flag first with Elliott finishing a kno bby- leng th
behin d . Derek Gerdes rode hard to claim thir d,
wh ile Boynton and Ryan Wa llace finishe d out
the top five.
Ma rley ret urned to wreak havoc in 12-13
80cc Se nior division . He was unstoppable as he
won both motos going away. Boyn ton we nt 2-2.
while Scotty Trim ble claimed third with consi ste n t 5-3 p la cings . Ba rry O tts sn agged fo u rth
with a 4-6 tally, w h ile Joshu a Brid ges, w ho
recently retu rned to motocross after a bu sy season of footba ll, placed in the top five with 3-7
finishes.
Elliott had no troub le and continued to ride
well in the 80cc Senior (14-15) cla ss with an
undisputable 1-1 tally. Ryan Wallace kept pace
with a pair of deuces, and Ryan Petty with a pair
threes.

Th e fir st 125cc m ot o saw Spaniard Oscar
Lanza land the ho leshct, but he wa s no match
for th e local pros who promptly pushed h im
back into the pack.
Emerging first was Suzuki rider Scott Sheak
with teammate's Don Upton and Greg Schnell in
tow. Pingree started poorly and was racing ou tside the top five. Pingree, not one to lay down
and gi ve up , fough t back, an d by the halfway
poi n t in the race had moved in to th ird behind
Schnell and Sheak .
Up ton fell down and dropped back to fourth
while Pingree put the move on Schnell for second. Pingree chased after Sheak the rema inder
of the moto bu t was shut down repeatedly by
Sheak, who won the moto. Pingree crossed the
line second followed by Sch nell, Upton and
Lanza.
Honda rider Ray Hensl ey led the way duro
ing the start of the second moto. Like the firs t
moto , the red bi ke went backwards while the
yellow an d green bikes moved forwa rd . This
time Schnell was the rider on the move, and he
quickly ga there d up the lead wi th Pingree and
Sheak giving chase .
Schnell led for five laps before giving up the
lead to Pingree. A lap later it wasSheak's tum to
do the passing as he dropped Schnell ba ck a
pos ition . Sheak caught Pingree and passed him
by sweeping around an outsi de line, bu t Pingree
came right back and retoo k the lead .
The two rid ers battled close ly to the finish
with Pingree pre vailing for the moto and ove rall
win. Sheak finished secon d whi le Schnell, Upton
and Hensley rounded out the top five.

Cartwright wrangles Purcell
Vintage Short Track victory

A lengthened, wet and heavy track did nothing
to deter Danny Cartwright from winning round
three of the Broz Financial Ltd./ Vintage Classics
vm dirt track series on the indoor short track at
the MeGain County Expo Center.
Cartwright has yet to be defeated at Purcell,
not that the oth er rid ers hav en 't tried. Behind
Cartwright in the Pro-Twin main wa s some very
fine racing. including a battl e royal between the
Harleys of Dallas Babcock and Bob Braunreiter,
who swapped th e secon d position four times
before Kevin Whit esides took advantage of the
dueling pair. Whitesides angled by Braunreiter
w ith a smoo th m ane u ver in late-race lap ped
traffic to lock-in th ird place . Second -placed rider
an d VDTRA Pro-Twin na tion al points leader
Babcock was heard to say in the pit s that his
Harley h ad been running on only one cylinder
througho ut the eve nt, and only freque nt clutch
work saved hi s position . In the Pro-twin "Dash
for Cash" Cartwright aga in do mina ted the field,
with Babcock clo sing and th e e ve r present
Braunreiter in the chase as well .
In other vintage Pro action, To ny Neill
passed ear ly lead er John Fike to take the win in
Pro 600cc class. Mark Robinson wo rked the outside line to ge t by Gary Brennan m idway
through the race and ta ke third be hind [ohn
Fike.
Always a crowd favorite, the Masters class
main wa s especially en ter tai ning as Danny
Hammond skated hi s Honda into the lead.
lames Vaugh t and Gary Brennan pushed them selves and the track to catch him. Va ught
slipped by Brenn an in the early laps, but Brennan stayed at h is sid e and challenged him at
every tum. The race was only decided on the
last lap when a falle n rider collected Vaught,
ending a fine charge. Rand y Whitesides' consisten t riding landed him the thir d spot.

250cc Expert classes when Motorcycle Raceways
h osted the third race in the Oklahoma State MX
Series .
Well ove r 300 entrants showed up for the
first night race of the series. They were not disappointed wi th track conditions, as the course
was we ll groo med and moist.
Jack Brassfield pulled off the holeshot in his
attempt at the 125cc victory, but Palmer and his
Oklahoma H onda-Suzuki / FMF / D u n lop/
Bieffe/Smith-backed RM 125 overcame the first·
moto lead of Bras sfield to score the win', followed by Dennis Owens in second and Robbie
Skaggs in thi rd . Team Green rounded out the
top five with Bra ssfield in fo u rth and Andy
Bowyer in fifth.
Brassfield again led off the line in molo two,
thi s time riding his own race and leading the
aerial antics by soaring over the tunnel ju mp
and wowing the crowd with some of the longest
jumps of the night. Palmer gave chase, following
the yo ung Kawasaki rider into the Oklahoma
night sky . Palmer could not catch Brassfie ld in
time for the top spot, but his 1-2 finishes were all
he needed for the overall win.
