Smith had his work cut ou t for him when he entered two of the larg est and most competitive classes in AHRMA motocross. But he was up to the task, snatching top honors in both the 250cc and 30+ Intermediate A divisions. With the large turnout, both classes had to be split into two races . Taking third behind Smith in both events after a long . commute was Englishm an Alan Woods. By Matt Hilgenberg BRENlWOOD, CA, APR.22-23 ea t weather and great competi'on headlined during the second rounds of the two major off-road se ries for the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) held at Sandhill Ranch . Both events - Saturday's British Bike Magazine National Trial and Sunday's Vintage Iron National Motocross - were blessed with tons of sun and temperatures in the 80s; this, after bein g plagued by rain two of the past thr ee years, and after this wino. ter 's torrential, virtually non-stop rain that flooded much of Northern California. This was the first of three trials /MX doubleheaders scheduled for California this season. ~ TRIAL Eigh ty-th ree ride rs entere d the Star man Productions-promoted event, which was also round two of the AHRMA West Regional Trials Series. Participants were fac ed with th ree loops o f 10 sections each, laid au t by ve teran trials rid er Derek Belvoir. The sections were just about perfect for vintage trials - all were "clea na ble," but those clea ns had to be earned. Five vintage riders turned in pe rfect scores for the d ay, w ith four of them in th e Modern Classic Advanc ed cla ss: AHRMA's age rule - where, in the case of an absolu te tie score, the oldest guy wins - came in to pla y here, with "Gran dpa Pete" Biddy getting top honors over Joe .Lo re rize n, Ri chard Yel ki n and Cla rk Sumner. The othe r clean d ay came from AJS 500 rid er Steve Dar row, w ho won the Premier Heavyw eight Master division. Three class winners were decided by a single point. Greg Carte r's two points' edged John Moore (Suz u ki) in Mod ern Classic Master; Ken Mar ec ak maneuvered his Triumph Cub past the Greeves of Ken Dodge in Premier Lightweight Master; and Mark Roler headed the allBSA en try in Pr emier Light wei ght Advanced. ' MOTOCROSS Traditionally one of the biggest events on the schedule, this yea r's Dick /Kay Mann-promoted, Hap Jones-sponsored Nationa l MX drew 327 participants. The course was fairly fast, and featured a lot of elevation change; even with the hot, sunny weather and large entry, the track stayed in good conditi on, providing close racing. The Past Masters race was typica l of the nose-to-tai l running at the event. John Hatele y led the entire distan ce on his big Triumph 6SO, but was sha dowe d by Bultaco-mounted Tom Rapp for the first half of th e five-lap rac e. Pen ton rider Russ Powell then mad e it a three-way battl e before passing Rapp and pourin g the pre ssure on Hateley, who held on to a two-bik e-length lead at the finish. After the race, there were interviews with all the Past Masters, includin g Chuck "Feets" Miner t, Jeff Smith, Buck Murphy and Chris Draayer. Five riders were able to pull off double class victories. Rick Doughty rode his BSA Gold Star to the Premier SOO Expert win over Mike Atkins ' new "Mabsa," a Matchless G80CS-powered BSA chassis, and Buck Murphy, on another Gold Star. Then Dough ty passed Scott Dunlavey on the long, rough downhill portion of the track and mot ored to the Open Twi ns Expert victory. David Fis her, ar me d with an Ossa Stillet o, sw ep t both mo tos of Prem ier Lightweight IT Expert, then used an Ossa Phant om and a 3-1 score to top the 30+ Experts over Mark Brooks. Brooks pulled off a win in the 12SccExperts .
