On Saturday, with cond itions really dry, these were ma ster ed by all the top riders with the top 10 all losin g under 20 marks (of a possib le 65). Tarres look ed absolu tely immaculate, losing just seven in a ll si ng le dabs, an d never allow ed himself to get in trouble. Lampkin was si m p ly goin g for every th in g, a nd he a lmost achieved it. He cleaned nine of the 13 sections, on ly coming unstuck on th e seventh , wh ich featured a big, big step and then a steep rock face climb to the car ds . This was to prove Lam pkin's bogey for the weeken d . Colomer actually looked exactly as he had the previous weekend in England - a mi xture of brilliance and the very ordinary . Sloppy twos and threes spoiled some brilliant cleans, althou gh he was obviously well in touch. His countryman Pons, on the 350 Gas Gas, was in a similar boat with neither looking particularly strong. Kuroyama rode, just as he did in Luxembo urg and England, right at the front of the field and just reveled in the dry. Using his incredibl e balance and easy machine control, Kuroyama jus t rod e his Beta throu gh the sections as if it were a bicycle, hopping and jumping with great effect. His total of eight dean rides was better ed only by Lampkin . In contra st, Tarres mana ged only six d eans, Colomer seven and Narita a mere three. The organizers prayed for rain rather than stiffening the sections, and the Irish God mu st be a trials rider as on Saturday night the y got gallons of it. Heavy rainfall made the green rocks mega-slippery an d Sunday was a totally different event with the scores in gene ral bein g double the losses of Saturday. Tarres was the hot favori te and no one knew it more than Ta rres himself. " I want to score man y points when it is wet , as in the d ry many other riders are very good," said Tarres. " Not ma ny ar e very good in the we t, no?" Everyone was in full agreemen t wi th the World Champion . The trouble was that no one else was p repared to ride the scrip t. The fourth section was one of the most techni cal of the da y as it twi sted an d turned over the rock s with equ all y tricky d r op s an d climbs. And it was slippe ry on the seco nd day . N orm ally, thi s w ould h a ve been "[o rd i's Kingd om ," yet he fived it on both att empts. Ironically, on the first try he almos t looped ou t as he found too much grip on a gripless slimy slab. Tarres was every bit as amazed at his stop as the crowd was. Colomer had ea rlier earn ed applause for a skilled single-d ab ride, while on the fina l circui t Lampkin alone coax ed his mount through for a one-dab ride. That final lap was a real battle of skill as both Colomer and Lampkin turned on the style to move them well clear of their p ursuers. Co lomer proved su p reme on that difficult seven th sec tio n, which he cleaned effortlessly for the thi rd tim e. Only Italian Donato Miglio sh owed an yth in g close to Col omer's control, as he eased his Gas Gas thro ugh with scores of one, two and clean. Lampkin ma de it up the section with a sing le dab after two costly fives, but in fairness it was a mighty big hea ve and he was rea lly nowhe re near cleaning th is on e. Th rottle control is certai nly one area that the Lam pkins will be coachin g Dou g on th is week. Former American Wo rld Round wi nner John La m pki n, Doug' s cous in, is parti cularly skilled at this gentle art . A five whe n he punctured on the second section on the final lap didn't d o Tarres' cause an y good, no r did another on , four. And when he again came unstuck on the greasy climb in the seventh section - which was tailor-made for him - all was lost. Making a big comeback, though, was Pantie's Ahvala. He put much more effort into Sunda y than Saturday, in whi ch he showed no he art to ride. H is minder, Woody Ho le, told Afivala bluntly that if he wasn't going to try, then he would no longer work for him . "I rod e in my one-piece suit on Saturday a nd w as freezing," sa id Ahva la . "That's why I rode so bad. " "Don't believe him," responded Hole. "He was jus t rubbish." "It's no excuse I know, but wait until we get to Sp ain, Italy and France, then I'll show them wh o can rid e." And just creeping into the top 15 were a couple of the new wave of youngst ers d etermined to make a name for themsel ves. Spanish federa tio n team riders Mar cel [us tribo and Gabriel Reyes, p lush Finnish hope Joach im Hindren, who all elbowed out more experienced riders like Amos Bilbao, Rob Crawford, Piero Sembenini and [ean-Luc Nictou. But u p a t the front it was Colomer who went to bed the happiest, with the excep tion of Kuroyam a on reflection.
