Phillip Wilkinson unloaded h is KX250 in the
morning. then u nloaded on the competition to
post a double-mote sweep of the 250cc C class at
Wausau Motocross.
In moto one, Cleve Roberts took the holesh ot
and began to se t th e pace. However, f ortson
Rumb le decided a faster pace was necessary and
blit zed by to take the lead. The tw o long-time
rivals began a series of brake-checking and lineswapping as they careened around the track and
off of ea ch other. Wh ile they were using each
other for traction, Wilkinson snuck up on them
both and blazed by Robert s and then Rumb le to
take the lead . Rum ble bega n to fade as fatigue
set in, bu t Robert caught his second wind an d
began a charge after Wilkinson, who held on to
win with Roberts brea thing down his neck for
second.
Moto two saw Ronn ie Smith nail down the
holeshot, but th is ti me Wi lkinson wasted no
time in getting out front. For a while Wilkinson,
Smith , Ru m b le and Rob e rts freig ht- traine d
around the track, each within striking distance
of the lead . The tr ain became derailed however,
whe n Smith crashed an d Ru mble sta lled in a
comer. Wilkinson again took the moto win over
Roberts with Rumb le hold ing down thi rd over a .
very hard-char ging Steve Davis .
Tim Stokes returned to raci ng speed as he
nailed down the ove rall win in the 250cc B class
and finished a ~Iose second to Paul Zelinsky in
the Vet B class. Jordan Peepl es pushed his Cycle
Shop of Tallahassee-sponsored KX 80 into the
wi nne r's circle of a crowded BOcc C class. The
125cc D class acti on saw an other Cycle Shop
rider go home with first pla ce honors as Ch uck
Sapp took the win over Ter ry [nel l. "Ju mp ing
James" Stephens continued his dom ina tion of
the Jr. Cycle class, sty ling his way to the overall
win ove r Jim McArth ur and Cole Boutwell.

Pounders smashes 'em at
Roebling Road Road Race
By Bob App legate
FAULKVILLE, GA, APR. So9
Lee Pounders made his comeback to road racing
in style by winning thr ee races in his first time
out on a GP bike at Roebling Road Raceway.
The young Florida sign painter who made
CCS and Da ytona histo ry in 1990 as the first
ride r to w in four Amateur Nati onal Championships at the CCS Race of Champions kicked
off his wi nn ing weekend with a romp in the
Solo GTU contest. He wasted no time in coming
to grips with his 1993 Honda RS250 whil e going
up against the CBR600F3 of Leslie Horne. The
tw o swapped back and forth while their lap
time s dr opped into the one minute, 16-seco nd
range until Ho rn e' s tire w en t away and
Pounders cruised to the win..
Pounders' second win was eve n more of a
confidence boos ter as he took his Full Spect rum
Racing /Lee's Signs-backed Hon da to a flag-toflag win in the Lightweight GP race.
The Middleweight GP event was a different
story, with Ho me again the challenger. Horne
took the lead while Pou nders dogged him from
a close second . Pou nders finally made the pass
on the whi te-flag lap for h is thi rd w in of the
weekend .
Racin g Gra ndfather Frank Kinsey took the
GTO class win , poweri ng by early leader Gene
Church and then Paul Netterstrom late in the 50miler on his potent Yamaha 1000.
Multi -time Regiona l Champion Brian Gibb s
has always been strong at Roebling Road, and
this w eekend wa s no exception. The young
Georgia rider worked his CBR600F3 around the
bumpy two-mile course to beat out the 750cc
mou nted riders in Heavyweight Supersport. He
repea ted in Middl ew eight Supersport, winning
ove r David Estok, who returned the favor by
edging out Gibbs at the line in Heavyweight
Sup erbike, taking the majority of the $750 CCS
purse.
