Tarres started out on a mirror image of his p revious day's lap, leading off with cle an, clean, one, clean. Then he came to the fifth section, which had upset his applecart on Saturday. Here, Tarres displayed all his experience as he cleaned the ste p absolutely brilliantly. His pre-jump at the rock face was not as h igh as many, b ut as the rear tire hit home, Tarres ju s t stood back and bu rned rubber up the final two feet. The crowd knew then th at there was only ever going to be one winner. In contrast, Tommi Ah vala - who had cleaned the step the first time - crashed backw ar d s and cursed his bad fortune in three languages - Finnish, French an d English! Ah vala did, however, man age a sheepish smile w hen congratulated on his linguistic skills . As Tarres cruised his way to another best-on-loop score of 10 marks, his com pa triot Marc Colomer on the works Montesa was on the charge. Starting the day down in ninth p lace, Colomer put together a superb lap of 11, matching only Tarres in not picking up a single five through the 14 sections. The mo st- improved lap sco re came from yet ano the r Spaniard, young Marcel [ustribo , who followe d h is opening day' s lap of 43 - which included seven fives - down to an eye-opening 18 with just a single maximum. Luxembourg winner Ah vala was gettin g to grips with the d ifferent terrain and his seco nd-lap sco re of 18 put him in to a head with Col om er for the runner-up berth. The rest were ou t of it . Narita's fo rm d eserted h im almost as qu ickly as it had arri ved, an d instea d of looking for a place on the podium, he was d esperat el y tr ying to stay in th e top 10. Ta r res k icked o ff h is fi n a l lap in super-confident form, but then halfway around the lap he seemed to su dd enly contract a bad case of nerves. The low point cam e as he fived the 11th section virtually right on the in cards whil e attempting asmal l step that he would normally ride up on a moped . Na rita , in copycat fashion , then did exacll y the same. But ther e was to be no d enying the World Champion hi s w in, as Tarres right behind Colley came his old adversary, Bruno Camozzi, wh o staged a mini comeback h imself aft er a high-scoring Saturday . Big Bruno, on his privateer Beta, actuall y overhau led factory rider Narita as the thin Asian rider struggled to get back in to the world scene after a lon g winter spent at hom e. Jarvis, a real quiet man, reflected on his best finish in a World Round to date by saying,"This is my best pla cing, yet I feel it was one of my worst rid es ." We knew what that meant as Jarvis inflicted some real damage on the factory Scorpa with several mega crashes that saw the bike looping end-over-end down the hillsides with himself somersaulting either in front of or behind the errant machine. Spania rds packed the lower order with Benitez, Bilbao and Ju stribo holding off It ali a n veteran Diego Bosis. Lampkin finished an unbelievable 14th. His scorecards showed that ju st two section s had done most of the damage, as Lampkin collected a ma ximum 15 in both the ninth and 14th sections. In contrast, 15th-place Dario Re Delle Gandine - Lampkin's ma in rival during h is European championship w inning' yea r - dropped just a single mark in the last section. Ty p ically, aft er th e eve nt was ove r, Lampkin rode st r ai gh t back to the offending sections an d rod e them fault lessl y on his first try. It was of no use at all, of course, but at least he left Hawk sto ne kn ow ing that he hadn't actu ally forg otten how to ride a bik e , With the pressure off, Lampkin could easily roar back wi th a vengeance at the next round in Ireland, which will fea tu re much more conventional rockery in the Vicklow Mountains. l~ (Above) Spaniard Joan Pons was the best of the res t, finis hing fourth beh ind Tarres, Colomer and Ahvala. (Above right) Graham Jarvis continues to impress aboard his factory Scarpa. The quiet Brit rounded out the top 10. (Right) Steve Colley, was the top-finishing British rider In seventh. (please check that in the agate) Though the trial was held In Britain, It was far from a typical slippery English event . quickly regained his composure and coolly finished the fina l two hazards with a one and a clean, Narita went to pieces with two fives. Colomer proved that his previous lap was no fluke as he again circulated for a score of 11 - the best of the loop - with Colomer's confidence notably returning as he find s the rev amped Cota is a pretty good weapon . Th e torquey motor was particularly helpful in the power sucking sand of the Hawkstone venue. Colomer even managed to smile at the • tro p hy presentat ion - a n d th at ta kes some doin g. Former World Ch ampi on Ah v al a worked his loop sco re down to a wo rthy 12 and this sa w h im eas ily in to third on the weekend. The same three fini sh ers ha ve topped th e field at the first two even ts - th ou gh in d ifferent order - and already, Ta rres, Col omer a n d Ahvala are pu lling cl ear of the pack. Joan Pons took a sa fe fou rth on hi s 350 'Gas Gas, and as usual, looked efficient ra ther than spectacular. Miglio was fifth. The s tu d io us- looking Miglio is very much th e in vi sible m an in the world of trials . You n ever remember s eein g Miglio in a sect ion, ye t h e is always in the top 10 at the end of the day.
