WORlD IUPER.'KE Burkhart brilliant atHonda Hills L AG U N A By Rupert F. Pellett · UNVlLLE, OH,APR. 8 Mar k Burkhart used 2-1 moto finishes to best the co m petition in t he Sc hoo lboy class as he retu rn ed to m o tocross raci n g action at the Honda Hills season opener. The skies opened up halfway through the racing p rogram putting down a good bit of moistu re on the well -prepped track, however the ded icated Ohio racers installed the tear-offs and enjoyed the mud . leff Gibson grabbed a nice holesh ot at the start of the first Schoolboy mota with C h r is Berry on his heels and Frank Stephens in third. Burkhart elected to remain at the gate and not get caught up in a first-tum me lee as he was just coming back from suffering a broken arm. After the pack rounded the first tu m, Burkhart was off in high speed pursuit. At the front , Berry had snuck around Gibson for the lead and began to put some d is tance between the two . By the third lap, the Honda of Troy-backed Burkhart had slipped throu gh the pack and was banging on Gibson's doo r for second. Gibson seemed surprised by the int ru d er a nd allowed Burkhart to take the runne r-u p spo t. Berry wou ld take the checkers followed by Burkhart, Gibson and Tony Mock in fourth. The second mota was all Burkh art 's as he ran off w ith the victory and the ove rall, giving Berry second and Gibson third. In the 30+ class it was Gerry Bennett and his Ho nd a putt in g th e mo ves on hi s fello w o ld time rs as the 40-som et hing mota pi lot used a pair of wins to take the overall . The supe r old timers had to contend with Bennett also as he used another two- mota sw eep to conqu er the 40+ class.
