By Kyle C. Parsons
PERRIS, CA. APR.2
The Ov er The Hill Gang kick ed off th eir fir st

Ya m a ha O f Cucamonga -backed rider Ernie
Kop asz proved to be the one to beat in the Inter mediate class .
Fr o m th e dro p of th e fi rs t- mo to g ate,
Kop asz reeled a hoIesh ot an d d isappe ared from
s ight. Wi th Ra ndy Dryer and Joh n Riz zo in
pursuit. th e battle focused on sec on d through
fourth, as Kopasz ha d a lrea d y extend e d h is
lead to six seco nds by th e en d of th e firs t lap .
Wh ile Dryer and Rizzo were engaged in ba ttle,
Gre g Green ha d closed the ga p to join the fray.
To Rizzo' s su rp rise. Green ha d com e out of
nowhere to challenge fo r third . Rizzo' s shi ft
fro m offense to d efense allowed Dryer to dis-tance hi mself from the third- an d fourth-place
riders . Green mad e hi s mov e on the last lap,
ge tti ng around Rizzo fo r third pl ace po sition.
Kopasz took th e first m oto win a fu ll 20 second s ah ead of the pack, with Dryer in the runner -up po sition .
As the ga te dropped for th e seco nd moto,
Kopa sz and Rizzo go t the jump on the rest of the
pack. Side by side int o the first tum, Kopasz got
a wh eel on Rizzo before launching off the first of
many Sta rwes t tabl etops . Unaware of the enormous first tum pileup which consumed a number of the fir st -m ot o front-runners, Kopasz,
Rizzo, Green and Keith Shigata got ou t clean
a nd had an open track ahead of them. After the
first lap, Kopasz had again stret ched his lead to
six bike lengths, leaving Rizzo to fend off hard
chargers Gn.~"I\ and Shigata.
On lap two. Green got around Rizzo and set
hi s sigh ts on Kopasz, who had increased hi s
lead to 10 bike lengths. Shigata seemed up to the
challenge, closin g on Rizzo and maki ng his presence known. By la p six, Shig ata made the pass
on Rizzo , setting his sigh ts on Green, who had
pulled away from the two riders and had managed to close some distance on the unstoppable
Kopesz, wh o would take the checkered flag with
a 2Q-second lead followed by Green, Shigata and
Rizzo.
