The Rosa Con cep ts'-backed Rosa led almo st wire to wire in both races of the two-moto format aboard an M&M /Tony Hoover /Dove Oil sponsor ed Yamaha. Wood-Rotax-mounted Jim K"sler led the pros into tum one tailed by Rosa, A.J. Hererra, Dave Pefton and Dave Rust . Rosa ran inside Kesler to take the lead down the back straight and left him to fend off the assault of Hererra, who tried for sev era l lap s to run outside of Kesler. making a pass stick on lap five. Ke ster came to take second back. running hard int o tum three and taking the runner-up spot briefly unti l his engine stall ed . He managed to bump it off again. but Hererra and Dave Alexan d er slip pe d past , leavin g Kesl er fou rt h at the flag. Rick Pearce appeared to lead a pack containing Hererra, Rosa and Alexander int o th e firs t com er, but Rosa once again came out on top of the pa ck of Rota x rid e rs . Pear ce mom en tarily p assed back for top spot. but Rosa ra n in low and took the lead back . Hererrra pulled alo ngsid e Pearce, and the tw o sw a ppe d seco nd for severa l laps. Hererra eventu a lly pulled aw ay and aime d fo r th e lead er. But Rosa held the ins ide lin e. forcing Her erra to take a high line that carried him alo ngside the leader and looking to ma ke the pa ss stick. As the white flag came out Rosa and Hererra stayed side by side, bu t Her e rra hit a slic k spot in tu m three and low-si de d . handing to p honor s to Rosa, who wa s followed to the che cke red flag by Pearce, Kesler and Alexan de r. The m odern vin ta ge cla ss looked like a Track mast e r reunion as it left the line , led by Don Mein er ' s TISOO. Me in er was ch'asc d by Steve Hensl ey's BSA and the Trium phs of Rick Rockhold and Chris Wakula. Rockh old found a line he liked and ran around the ou tsid e of the leaders on lap five, pulling awa y to take the first race. OR, MAR. 26 LD Nati onal numbe r 76 Jeff Ha rsha and 1994 SOcc Nati onal Amateur Short Track Champion Mickey Lane were among an all-star lineup of class winners durin g th e ne xt -to-last indoor short t ra ck ra ce at the C u rl y County Fair grounds Exposition Arena. Qualifyin g kick ed of f the d ay 's program with Harsha and Honda-mounted Oift Helms picking up Open class wins. Harsha breezed to a win in his heat while Helms fought off former AMA Jun ior Pro Bob Ingle to win heat two. In the da y' s larg est class, Sean Light. Erick Vallejo and Lane won 80cc preliminaries. Harsha wasted little time jumping out front of the IS-lap Open A main event. leading Helms and Yamaha-mounted Ingle, who put a wheel und erneath Helms to go after Harsha but co u ld n' t hold the spot and would spen d the remainder of the race chasing Helms. By lap seven, Harsha had lapped up to third place, and w ith three laps to go , lapped seco nd -p la ced Helms en route to a win aboard the Evergreen Drywall /Golden West M/C Accessori es-backed Rot ax. Ingle took th ird ahead of Honda riders Roger Sherreil and fonner pro Jake Jones. In th e 80cc A main, polesitter Light shot out front of the two-row final and tried to keep Lane behind him for five laps. The National Champion Lane then pa ssed Light and maintained a slim lea d to pick u p a win on th e Red Line ·O il /J &D Custo m Embroidery /S tyle King/ Armaditio-prepa red Suzuki. Lig ht's secondplace finish wa s good for the amateur portion win while experts Travis Ingle, Damien Saitzman and Amy Light filled the top five Californian Shawn Higham rode impressively enough all day to score a sweep of the combined SO/6Occ class, taking a wire-to-wire win in the A main over fellow KX rider Franki e Lane and Suzuki-mounted Brad Strong.
