EVENTS' .Edited by Scolt RousSeau Hamann, 10-16. Reigning ATA Champion Jared Malmquist had trouble warming up, and completed loop one with a score of 32. Oamagirand all but wrapped up his victory with an amazing zero-point second loop. The fifth-ranked rider in the nation was impressive as he hopped, skip ped and jumped his way effortlessly through all 10 sections. OTP's Malmquist found his stride on loop two and edged out Hamann, 14-15. The third loop saw Oamagirand give up two points and wrap up yet another victory, while Mal mquist again edged ou t Hamann, 16-22. The damage done durin g th e first loo p though , h eld Malmquist to third. "I had two stu p id five s on the first loop," said Oamagirand. "In one section I went out of bounds. I should hav e had tw o clean loops, but I am happy." In In termedia te A class action, 62year-old Ar t Webst er showed the youngsters how it's d one by literally roo sting away with the win . Webster's aggressive, high-speed tactics left many wondering if he had, in fact, tak en up th e wron g sp ort - perhaps motocross would have better suited his style. Webs te r gave up 34 points, two less than runner-up Ron Catavaio. Brad McClellan was third with 44. Torr Motors' Mark O ldar pil oted a new Fantic Section to a commanding wi n in the .Ad va nced A cla ss, edging ou t Montesa Cora-mounted Oli Th or d arson . (~ Results NOV Ie 1. A health y turnou t of riders showed up to tes t themsel ves against the challenging sec tions la id o ut by the San Diego Tria ls Riders, and most on hand agreed that the event was th e be st in recent memory. An extremely challenging loop routed riders up, d own and around the mountainous area. Intermediate, Advanced and Exp ert riders were run through all 10 sections, while Novice and Sportsman riders rode only eight. As usual, Oamagirand showed up as most riders we re 'alread y starting their first loop - a European psyche-out strategy, perhaps? Team G reen 's Matt Walker nailed down five class wins: 80cc (12-13) Stock and Unlimited Mini on Satu rday; and Junior Mini, Senior Mini and Schoolboy on Sunday. Possibly the hardest riding Walker had to do all day was in Sunday's Schoolboy class Walker, who was aboard a Kawasaki Big Wheel against a raft of 125s, knew that he had to get the ju m p on the bigger b ikes in order to even be in the running for a top -five finish. Walker su rp rised the field with a first-mote holeshot, th en rode like h is britches were afire. Scott McMillin, Jon Boruff, Paul Justus and Jeff Ryan had their hands full trying to catch Walker on the first lap . Marcus Hedrick came up from a midpack finish , showing the way for Jason Frecke r, and the pai r d isplaced bo th Ryan an d Jus tus to crack the top five . Walker scored the firs t-mo to win followed by McMillin, Boruff, Frecker and Hedrick. Walker was squeezed out on the second-rnoto start and gated fifth behind Frecker, Boruff, Hedrick an d Justus. By the halfway point in the four-lap battle, McMillin had recovered to run fourth from a mi serable s ta rt to challenge Hedrick. For the better part of a lap, Hedri ck kept hi s cool, riding smart defense as McMillin put m.ore pressure on the Suzuki pilot. The pair accelerated, catching up to the front duo and coming closer to the ragged edge with each corner. Finally at the apex of the uphill horseshoe, McMillin's grip slipped and his Kawasaki T-boned Hedrick's Suzuki, crashing them both to the gro un d. Walker zipped past the carnage to claim thi rrd. At th e en d of the race, Frecker and Boruff maintained first and second, respectably followed by overall winner Walke r, Josh Scott and Ryan. Another Walker, Kevin (no relation ), had a pretty good day of his own.
