just as before, And rews was quick to get out front
and build comfo rtable lead to the finis h. Price
had the wick tu rned up a bit in moto two and
also picked off Styron to take second, which net• ted him second for the day, whi le Styron grabbed
third. Stull ran as high as third du ring the moto
until he slow ly faded ou t of the top five.

Western Regional MX Series at Los
Angeles County Raceway. (Below) Mike
Andrews (601) and TIlden Styron (111)
battled for top honors in the 2SOCc A class
at the Devil's Ridge MX. Andrews came out
on top in both motos for the overall win.
However, Kennedy's moto would end earl y, as
he wa s forced to withdraw with mechanical
pr oblems. Barlaan took his new ly inherited lead
and held on for the win as he pulled away from
Vogl er and Martin, who caOle up just inches
short of seco nd place after a last-lap pass attempt
on Vogler as the y rounded the the last tum.
Kennedy timed the gat e perfectly at the start
of the seco nd moto and again had the early lead .
but his seco nd moto would end the same as the
first did, with mechanical woes sidelining him
after three laps . Martin, Barlaan and Vogler then
Tan thre e abr ea st do w n th e whoope d -out
stra igh t as they battled for the lead . Bartaan was
the first to fall off the pace as he dropped hi s
Ho nda in a soft, left-hand berm and had trouble
res tarting his bike.
Vogler then mad e a slight bobbl e. and Mar tin was able to pull in fron t. Vogler stayed with
Martin, occasi onally showing hi s front wheel,
but couldn't complete the pass. Martin took the
checkers for the second moto and the class win,
narrowly de feating Vogler .

Andrews used the fact that the event was rou nd
two of the Ca roli na Ultra Series to cash in on
some se rio us Suz uki con tingen cy bucks as he
toppt.. four class wins with eight moto wins.

five sta tes and Canada bu t was clearly the most
do mina nt ride r at the eve nt. Andrews too k the
overall wins in the tough 125 and 250cc A classes as well as hard -fou ght wins in the competitive 25+ and 30+ A divisions .

By moto's end, Price was able to work past
Turling ton for third beh ind And rews and Styron, whi le the best battle for pos ition was yet to
unfold. The battle fo r fifth turned in to a tight
three-way fight , with Shipl ey holding the posi tion, as Templeton and Derek Stu ll gave cha se.

Smi th, ma king it a 1-2-3 sweep for Maico. There
was an acciden t on the open ing lap of mot o two,
which bro ught ou t the red flag and sidelined
Hipp with a broken wri st afte r he struck fallen
rider (and his neighbor) Maso n Butler, who had
finished sixth in the first event.
On the rest art, it was Ed Lowenberg's Bultaco that showed the wa y, but tha t mo to w in ,
co mb ined w it h hi s fir st -mot o fifth, wa s on ly
good for th ird ove rall. Sm ith 's 3-2 finis hes on
the d ay gave him th e overall on a tie br eak er
with Leonardo, who car ded a 1-4. Fourth overall
a nd fir st four-stroke wa s BSA B50-mo'un ted
Keith Petran gelo .
The 30+ Nov ice division was 13 riders stro ng
this time, and the oth er 12 entrants had to follow
Suzuki TM400 rider Tim McEntee. McEntee got
a lOth-p lace start in moto one, wa s up to second
by the end of the first lap, then motored past the
lead er and on to victory, prob ably earning him self an In termediate· c1ass co m peti tio n ca rd.
Ossa Phantom rider Paul Uma was second overall ahead of Don Beese.
J.D. Bramlet overca me a slip p ing clutch to
top each of the Prem ier 500 II Inte rmed iate races
on his BSA 844. Second in each contest was Jim
Keeto n, wh o rides a twi n-p ipe CZ 360. Charlie
Beck, who is still so rti n g o u t an oval-ba rrel
Maico, was third, ahead o f Jack Monger, who
debu ted a new Triumph 500 twin.

Over 270 rid ers came ou t to the Flori da Motosports Co m p lex to com pe te- in th e first Southeaste rn ·Are a Qualifier for the Lo rett a Lynn's
Amateu r Nationals, and Kenneth Jone~ was the
top rider of the day, winning three classes .
Jones won the 125cc B Mo difie d 250cc B
Modified and 250cc B Stock d ivision s.
In the first 250cc B Stock moto, Jones jum ped
out to the early lead with Jaso n Wasdin follow ing. Jones added to his lead on every lap until he
fell in the back sectio n of the cou rse, handing the
lead to Brian Raym ond. Jones quickly picked up
his machine an d closed in on Raym ond by the
last lap . As th e two front-runners en te red the
final comer befo re the finis h, Jones forced hi s
way by Raymond to take the openi ng- moto win.
Ray mond fell over and let Wasdin by for sec on d . Raym ond , Chris Leona rd an d Bn:tt Bohannon completed the top five.
Moto two was a ll Jones from start to finish.

to wire to secure the victory over Thomas, Renner, Ped rero, and McElhatten .
