Gamer had worked his way back up , pass ing Culpepper for third under the white flag. Leroy 5chmidlkofer smoked the Open Ama- YUlil,Il,l;fiiii_ Je teurs by six minu tes on his CR500. The very rough and technical track was to 5chmidlkofer's liking as he captured the Overall Amateur honors. Bryan Cook and Sean Reddish were blazing in the 250cc Expert ranks. The two riders pulled away from the pack and had their own battle. Cook held a slight advantage over. the entire SOmile race, and was the Ove ra ll Exper t win ne r. Reddish w as the runner-up. Th e mo to rcyclists who joined together to make this year's Ride For Kids d ual sport ride a roarin g success got a d oubl e dose of fun - the enjoyment of a 9S-mile du al spo rt course plus the warm glow of satisfaction that comes from raising $12.810 to help fight pediatric brain tumors the most deadly form of childhood cancer. The Dual Sport Ride for Kids was the opening rou nd of a 12·ride series that combines street and du al spo rt rides across the na tio n. Spo nso red by Americ an Honda, the Ride for Kids effort has raised more than $2.5 million in the last 11 years, wh ich has provid ed a shot in the arm for brain tumor research efforts and has helped to fund a national brain tumor registry . Five of the child ren who benefit from the fund raising efforts turned ou t to welcome the riders as they assembled at the Honda Rider Education Center in Colton to make their don ations and prepa re for the ride. Despite the gray, misty moming. the kids were all smiles as the y met Smokey the Bear and took rid es in th e Colton Police Department's upmarket squad car - a Corvette that was confiscated in a drug raid .
