Lone Star? we raced to it. It was like another bomb start," said Dircks , who put the pow er of his XR628 to good use . "Th e cou rse went through a cattleguard. I got there first, almost at th e sa me tim e as Zitterkopf. We went through together and raced from there all the way to the end. " The " second bomb run " onl y 15 miles from the finish perked Hunnicutt up for a moment or two, but the KX500 racer decided against launching an allor-nothing bid to regain a spot in the top five. "It was the perfect opportunity to m o ve up , but my head just wa sn 't there," said Hunnicutt. "I'd been like that all day. The bike was perfect, I was physically fine - I just wasn't mentally there. When they found the trail, everybody was going ballistic. It was a brandnew race, but I didn't want to push a bad thing and end up getting hurt." When the racers resett led into a new order, Zitterkopf and Dircks were leading the way, with Gray close behind. "1 happened to be right next to Dircks when he spotted the trail where it turned out of the sandwash, so I was the second one to get unlost," said Gray. "That helped out a bunch." But nothing co u ld help eno ug h to put the racers with in challen gin g d istance of Hamel, who completed yet anoth er flawless hare and hound event to take the overall hon ors by a fourminute margin. "It was a beautiful da y for a race, and I thought the club d id a really good job with marking the course. I had no problems with the markings," said Ha mel. "They used a va rie ty of ter rai n a nd it was good to get a wa y from Sou thern California, where most of the ser ies takes place. Up h~re there are a lot less whoops and it's nice to have a change of scenery. KTM ra cer Zitterkopf thundered home to take second overall and first in the Four-strok e division less than 10 seconds ahea d of third-placed Dircks, who grabbed the Over 30 win. "We were only four minutes behind Hamel. That's not too bad considering we were lost for a couple of minutes," said desert-newcomer Dircks. "All year I've been doing well, but I jus t make mistakes in the pits . I've still got a lot to learn but I'm getting better." Gra y's hopes of grabb ing fourth overall bit the dust when he crashed just two miles from the finish. "1 was behind Dircks all the way to the finish but when I fell, Curtis Dice passed me a nd he ended up finishi ng just a cou ple of feet in front of me, so I e nded up get ting fifth overall," sa id Gray, whose only consolation was winning the 250cc Expert division. "It was an okay course for a 250 on the first loop but the second lo op was definitely a 500cc course. It was a little more open and whooped-out. There wasn 't much I could do to catch up out there." Gr a y was followed home by Ba umann, Campbell, Richardson and Jason Dahners, and Hunnicutt rounded out the top 10. "Tenth is terrib le but it was definitely was worth the trip," said Hunnicutt. "1 love riding up there, and it was a grea t course - just a little bit shy on the mark- o Way Parlner.
