AT~rrEAM, NE & KI ' ~ ROWS K I ·TH E ULTI 3 WINS "I really don't want to sa y anything bad about th e club. In fact, they're a grea t club, and the y know how to put on an enduro, like they ha ve in the past ," added Hawkin s. " Bu t th is one was too fast." To make matters worse for Hawkins, and nearl y everyone else in the series, the enduro circu it returns to California for the fourth round o f the ser ies in Navarro, a place Da vis knows all too well. "I ' ve always done well up there, " said Davis. " I like the terrain and I'm lo oking forward to that one. I don't think they're looking forward to going back there. I could tell that Rand y really wanted to beat me in California ." Both Davis and Hawkins agreed that the first sect ion was the tightest of the day, and Hawk in s ju m p ed out to a quick lead over Davis . . "They had the odo check at 2.9 miles, and then an observation check," said Da vis. "I wasn't thinking and slowed down to ' zero ' the obse rvation check. And then they had a rese t and I started getting behind. I ended up dropping o ne (route point) ri ght off the bal. Rand y (Hawkins) made it. I assum ed he would." Both riders zeroed the next check as well as the next few. It wasn't until the fifth che ck that Davis gai ned back his ea rlie r lost point on Hawkins , and the two ri ders were again tied on whole poi nts . From th en o n, Da vis and Ha wk in s matched scores bu t w he n it carne to the tie breakers, Davis carne out on top. "This was a big race to wi n," said Davis . " Every race I' m learning new stuff, a lot of little th ings. I'm kind of surp ris ing myself. Things are just kind o f flo win g right no w. It's kind of weird ." Hawkins was obviou sly no t happy with th e way things turned ou t and, as a result, let his fru strations be known on not only the ev ent its elf, but the e nt ire e ndu ro ser ie s as of late. "End u ros in general are beco ming faster and faster ," said Hawkins. "Th is ha s been goi ng on for quite some time now. I mean I've never before ridden a SETRA race without touching my Bark Busters. If we're going to beat Ty, we've got to get him in th e woods. But, hey, you never know when the monkey could get on somebod y's back. You never know what's go ing to happen." Finishing all alone in third place with nine points dropped was the defending champ Steve Hatch, who held a twopoint advantage ov er th e next-closest riders Michael Lafferty and Kelby Pepper. Both Lafferty and Pepper dropped 11 points each , but Lafferty carne out on top on the tie breakers. Once aga in , the tie-break er points were used to break up the next two rid ers: Ala n G ra vit t and Russell Ep plig. They each dropped 12 points on the da y but it was Grav itt getting the ad vantage for sixth. George Waller [r., Kevin Bennett and Steve Smith rounded out th e top 10 overall.
