section "race" around the seventh section. Even so, the outcome of the races had little to do with the overall result. Tarres posted the best individual score in the qualifier, looking almost too good. The only section to stop him was a series of concrete pipes, but as these super-slippery hazards also stopped everyone else, he gave nothing away. Colley, nervous before the start, went into hyper-mode for his heat and he made qualifying for the final look easy. So did his partner through the sections, Nictou, who looked totally composed on his new Fantic Section as he matched Tarres with three cleans on the five hazards. His compatriot Camozzi had a horrid time, never achieving any sort of rhythm as he stiffly collected fives on the opening three sections. It was all over for Camozzi. It was also soon all over for Narita, as the Japanese rider looked indoor-rusty after spending four months at home. Spindle-thin Narita was cheerful, though, as he returned to Europe for the World Cha mpionship and was looking forward to the new season. Lampkin and Colomer both rode well, but were just shy of making the cut for the final. Colomer was particularly upset as he had just won the Bercy event last year and had been riding hot in recent indoor events. But a five on the first step of the first section effectively sent Colomer back to Barcelona before he even got his stride. Lampkin has still only ridden a dozen of the indoor events which require special skills, but as usual, Lampkin learns everything in double-time. Again, it was a single five which proved to be his downfall, this one coming in a log section. "I've got to stop taking these silly fives," Lampkin said. " I 'm nearly there now indoors, that was just unlucky. I landed too perfectly, actually, dead s traight and the front wheel slipped between the logs. I wanted to be a bit at an angle, really." Tarres and Ahvala rod e their first lap toge ther and both made the cou rse look almost too easy . Only the concre te pipes proved to be impossible to conquer. Ahvala's Fantic Section was certainly looking a bit tired after a winter spent practicing in Spain, but he was looking forward to new machinery in time for the World Rounds. The four-mart final saw the sections tackled backward, and it was all square after the first two, with all riders cleaning the first and fiving the second. But after Nictou, Ahvala and Colley all fived the third section - a series of angled tables, set in the ma in spectator stands - Tarres played his trump card and cleaned the section brilliantly, taking his time so that his rivals knew who was in charge and that they were beaten. Nictou and Ahvala almost acknowledged defeat on the spot, and only Colley really made the major effort and put enough pressure on Tarres to take him to the final run-off. It was a brilliant race, with the crowd going wild, but Tarres hasn't been World Champion six times for no good reason. Tarres did just eno ugh to keep Colley at bay and -collect his third Bercy win in six attempts. . Justice was probably done as Tarres is a most incredible talent, while Colley, with the crowd behind him, was simply ~ inspired .
