one of California 's finest MXers, Casey Lytle. Bogard came into the final 12Scc Open moto with confidence after posting the first-moto victory. But when the gate dropped for the final 12Sec Expert race, it was Eric Schnell and Lytle in first an d second, respectivel y, w ith Bogard third. Bogard used his home track advantage to move in to the lead aboard his U.S. Suzuki/ Answer/ Sm ith/ Pro Circui t-backed RM12S. Bogard extended his small lead but then sud denly slowed the pace. "I started getting loose," Bogard said. "Firs t, 1 almost crashed in the back section, then in the whoops when 1 tried to triple out and clipped the last rocker, that's when 1 decided to cool it." Ly tl e was quick to r espond a n d pulled in right behind Bogard and the ba ttle began. The two riders diced down to th e wire with Bogard pulling ah ead in the end . For the overall , Lytle settled fo r seco n d, while Team Gr een r id er Erick Vallejo passed Eric Schnell late in the race for third. Team G reen had its bases co vered in the Exp ert ranks with Casey Johnson taking the 2S0cc crown ove r teammatesMichael Brandes and Jeff Willoh. Bran des, howe ver, brought his green machine home for t h e 12Scc class championship ahead of Sheak and Johnson. Many of the entries at this year's event were of Mini cycle racers. In fact, three new classes were added to accommodate the increased number of Mini racers. "It's very encouraging for th e industry overall," said Team Gr een 's Mark Johnson. "The influx in Mini races can be attributed to the bab y boo m, or, in othe r wo rds, former racers who ha ve had children and no w are brin gin g them into the sport." This year a new 60cc (0-8) class was added to acco m modate many of the younger riders fresh out of the Pee Wee ranks. Former Pee Wee National cham p James Stewart was untouchable in the opening moto afte r passing the holesh ot kin g fro m Lynnwood, Was hington, Bra ndon Layton; Jimmy Nelson picked up the pace late in the moto and began to reel in Layton . " H e was faster in the turns," Layt on sa id . "But 1 was doubling the whoops and he wasn't." In the end Stewart won the race by a ond margin, while Layton held on 2D-sec forseeond in front of Nelson, Kyle Partridg e and Mini Olympic Pee Wee champ Nick Adams. The second moto was all Stewart as he pulled the holeshot and disappeared from the pack. . Nelson held off a moto-Iong charge by Adams for second, while Partridge and SOcc Stock and Modi fied Grand National Cha mpion Sean Collier rounded the top five. The Senior 60cc (9-11) class saw a battle between California hotshoes Chris Tocco and Jonathan Shimp . Tocco pulled the holeshot on his Pax-prepared KX60, but Shimp was the rider on the move, picking off Tocco early in the race and motoring home for the win. "Tocco was riding smooth," Shimp said. "I was just faster than him." Tocco made a critical mistake late in the race when his front end washed out in a rutted tum, which handed the runner-up position to Ryan Morias . Local Texa s speedste r Cha se Reed took th e t hi r d s po t, whil e Toc co regrouped for fou rth in fron t of Dylan Lord.
