Daytona . It's all part of a new approach to racing, according to Stem. "I just we nt ou t to ha ve fun. Th at's what I' m trying to do this year, put the fun back into racing. I got a little serious for a couple of years," Stem said. But he was no slouch, lapping in the high 2:00s an d low 2:01s, good eno ugh to stay close before handing off to lastminute substitute Roger Bennett . Stem said that Trip p Nob les ha d fallen off on Wednesday and that he'd asked Bennett to ride at about 7:00 p.rn, on Wednesday evening. "I th ink I made a good choice. He made me look slow," Stem said . Dutchman was th e first to change . riders, also fitting a new rear tire, followed by Pastline, with Cy cle Motion the last of the lead trio to pit. Whe n the changes were done, Kling had better than a 21-second lead on Bennett, with Deveau now back in third. Kling continued to ho ld a commanding edge until pitting with a suspected rear tire problem. After overshooting his pit, he di smounted, checked out the tire, and sped off. "I wasn't even supposed to come in. I wa s wo rried about the rear tir e be ing flat," Kling said. "I looked at it, made sure the re we re no pieces missing, gave it a couple of kicks. I d id n ' t want to change the rear tire if I didn't ha ve to. I didn't want to lose too much time. " Quickly back in the lead, Kling was nearly caught by Bennett, who was lapping faster than he eve r had at Daytona . "The bike is quite similar to my own (Superbike). It's a shade faster and not so good handling through the chicane," Bennett said. "I couldn't have asked for a better run really in this race." D a v e Deveau b r o u g h t the C y cl e Motion Suzuki GSXRllOO home th ird, well in front of fourth place. "We just wanted to get ou t of he re with some p oints and ge tting on the podium is really goo d," Deveau said . The Keystone/Norths ta r Ra cing tea m was in the thick o f th e quartet fighting over fourth until their pit stop, the first b y the front- runners, w it h Mario DuHamel ta kin g ove r for Dan Turner. Yet, by the time all the pit stops were over, with abou t 20 minutes to go, Lenzmeier was at the front of the quartet, heading the Rayce Team's Christian Zwedorn all the way to the flag. Pegasus Motorsports made a late charge to tak e over sixth, Shane Cla rk and Rick Kirk sharing the riding chores on the Honda CBR900, with Mark Miller Racing seventh, Mark Miller partnering C¥ David Roy.
