Roger Durkee and Willie McCo y would al so find th eir way past Parker, bu t co u ld d o little to work past Fay, who pole-putted h is wa y to the win. Varnes was seco nd. Heat five wa s a s le e p e r. Garvi s Honda's Rich King romped away with a co m man di ng win o ver Hall 's HarleyDa vid son rid er Ted Taylor. "I felt pretty good," said King. "The Hond a hooks up reall y w ell on th is track. It's a pol e-putter tonight, and that suits my style." A&R Racing's Will Davis topped the fina l hea t ra~e with relative ease. Joe . (Right) Roger Durkee (69) battles with larry Pegram (72). Durkee eventually made it by Pegram , who was struggling with bike setup, to finish s ixth. Pegram finished seventh. (left) Ronnie Jones qualified In the first heal In the main, he rode a strong race to finish third. (Below) Chris Carr celebrates his win with a shower of champagne as Terry Poovey and Ronnie Jones look on. . Kopp held d own se con d e arly in th e race, but could n' t hold off a hard-charging Georgie Price. "When the track is wet like thi s I can a lways ge t goi ng p re tty good," sa id Davis. "Ho pe fu lly, it won' t cha nge too mu ch befo re the main." Riders who d id n't make the first -orsecond-place cu t in the heat races ha d one last chance in one of four eight-lap semis. Only the winners would advance. KK Motorcycle Supply's Scott Stu m p, Craig Estelle, Armentrout and Doug O'Boyle earned tickets to the final. NATIONAL Afte r the previously mentioned start and red flag, Armentrout was helped off th e t r a ck by h is p it crew with an extreme ly sore leg. On the restart, Peg ra m led the chase in to tu m one, followed by Ca rr, King and the res t. Carr went low in the first two tu rn s and sne aked under Pegram . For all in ten ts an d purposes, the race w a s over. On ce in to the lea d, C a rr im me d iately .began to estab lish a wi de mar gin . . "I knew that if 1 cou ld ge t in front whil e the gu y in second ran some int erferen ce, I'd be able to break away," said Ca rr. "As it turns ou t, th at ' s ex ac tly what happened." Pe gr am fe n ded o ff Davis, Pri ce, Jones, Poo vey, King and Fay for the first two laps, but wo uld eve ntually slip bac k to seventh at the checkered flag . "I felt g reat in th e h ea t race, bu t 1 t r ied to m a k e so me changes that 1 thou ght wou ld help," said Peg ram. "As it turne d out, I.w ent the wrong way with the changes. It was a struggle right fro m the sta rt." Davis w as the firs t to sneak past the struggling Pegram , and od dly enough he too was struggling. "The track dried up and got a groove going," said Davis. "This alw ay s happens to me here. My chassis works best when it is ridden straight up and down, but when th e track gets like this you have to 'lay the bike over. The bike was just too squirrelly in the comers." Squirrelly bike or not, Da vis managed to hold his own until the 22nd lap. Jones shadowed Davis from lap six on, a nd was joined by Poovey and King later in the race. "Willy was going pretty slow, but he was prot ecting the low line real good," said Jones . "I saw Chris getting away, and at the same time heard Poovey catching up, but 1 d id n 't want to take a chance of going in low too hot and bumping into him." Poovey's charge th rough the field was incredi ble. " I d idn't think 1 cou ld catch up after starting on ihe back row," said Poovey. "Bu t 1 go t hoo ked up and started reeling them in." Poovey tired of the freight-train parad e and forced th e issu e, squeezing under Jones when the tiniest of openings was left for him in tum three. He then carried his m omentum past Davis as well, in the process startling him and causing him to slip off the groove. Jones followed Poovey past Davis, but by that time, it was too late to even think about catching Carr. Mo unted aboard his Lou McCrorytuned Rotax, Poovey took over second on the 21s t lap. By that time , th ough , Carr h a d over a fu ll s traig h tawa y between himself and hi s rival s . Carr enjoyed a three-second lead at th e finish, while Poovey an d Jones were separated by 20 bike lengt h s . Ki ng al so sneaked past the stru ggling Davis with tw o lap s to go and nabbed fourth . Davis was fifth, barely ahead of Durkee. "I haven't been on the 600 since last Sep tember in Ca stle Rock," said Carr. " It took me about tw o laps during pra ctice to get m y head on stra igh t. 1 had nothing but road race, road race, road race in my head . It was good to get back on dirt tracker." l~ Municipal Stadium Daytona Beach, Florida Results: March 10, 1995 HEA. T 1 (to Iilps; 1 0 ri ders, to p 2 qualify): l. Ronnie Jon es (Rtx); 2.
