leading aroun d the race track. As is the case in nearly all Daytona races, the chicane and the final drafting match to the checkered flag proved to be pivotal. "I tried to put as many r id er s be tween us as I could:' Merkel said. "There was a guy in the chicane and I zapped him and spooked him. I looked back and saw Tom stuck. I knew I had enou gh dis tance on him ." Kip p also knew he'd been do ne in: "We came up on a lap ped rid er-and I hit him pretty good:' th e Ohioan said. " Fred ki nd of s pooked him w hen he went by him an d he shot him off into m y d ir ec tion . I bu mp ed him. I just wasn't in the rig ht place a t the rig ht time. I really thought things were going . to work o u t m y way. The draft is so importan t in this race. We pull ed off a secon d place a n d I' m just ti ck le d because the Team Vance & Hines guys have jus t worke d so ha rd . We d idn' t ' decid e to d o this effort until two months ago . I ca n' t say enough ab ou t the ir efforts to put forth a winning motorcycle. That's all I can ask for." Jacks' race for third ended up being a lo n e ly on e after h e d ispo sed o f McDaniel. Behind them, Leslie go t the better of the two Team Kinko's Kawasaki riders, Wilson and Randolph. "It looked like the factory guys didn't want the privateers to tow off them too much," Leslie said. "I was hoping I could get hooked up with one of the Yoshimura bikes and get towed along. I know Merkel was ou t there for a flier and I know Kipp was pretty much gone. I just tried to settle in to a pace. I was caught up with the Kinko's Kawasaki gu ys and I was just glad that my Suzuki Sport GSXR750 was the bike that had a little over theirs. The w ind was the hardest thing. The wind was so tough in the West Horseshoe. And battling it down the back straightaway you had a serious head wind . We made a little bi t of a gear ch a n g e a n d I thin k we s ho ul d've gone even m ore fo r the wind." eN , AMA ~;ttJ.ocross Ratts LAGUNA'" eeSECA RACEWAY Daytona International Speedway Daytona Beach, Aorlda Resuhs : March 10, 1995 7SOc< SUPERS PO RT FINAL: I.
