would be brought out on the fourth lap d ue to an incident in tum six. James Randolph and Robert Wright we re kn ocked out of the race in the incident in the chicane with Jeffery Sney d, Max Autry and Andy Milton doing th e da mage in tu m six. DuHamel learned a little bit in the first portion of the race, and he formulated a new plan for the IS-lap restart: "On the firs t sta rt I saw that the track was a lo t ho t ter tha n in p r e v iou s days, " Du Hamel sa id later. "So on the restart, 1 decided t o bre a k away a n d get o ut front. " And h e did just that. H e led a t the d rop of the flag, opened up nearly a second by the en d of the second lap and continu ed to stretch his ad vantage to ove r 10 seconds befo re backing it do wn. By then th e race was hi s and he had broken the back of the others with his dazzling d isplay of 600cc Supersport racing . "It went rea lly well," DuH amel said. "This Honda F-3 is a roc ket ship. It lea ps out of co rners and it' s got great top s peed. I ju st pu t my head down and tried to break away . I had one tire which was out of balance and that caused me a little problem, but that w as it. It was like an IROC 's er ies alm os t and I w as th e fastes t g uy out there . They ch ose to come here a nd ra ce 600s - it w asn ' t a good idea for th em. I w as plannin g to see w ha t Scott (Russell) w as going to do. If he was go ing to mess around I wou ld have tried to go . For sure w ith him out it wa sn 't as tough." Tough wa s what was go ing on behind the Smokin' Joe's bike at the front . On the th ird lap it was Picotte, Barnes, Crevier, Hale, Kocinsk i, Zwedorn and Takah ito Mori mixing it up for second . Th at group would rem ain intact w ith the excep tion of Mori, wh o would d rop off the pace and into the grasp of Polen before eve ntually crashing out of the race. But th e six wou ld continue to swap spo ts rep eatedly aro und the tr ack, with Kocinsk i seem ing ly fee li ng o u t th e strangers he was racing with. Barn es and h is Bridgestone-shod Erio n Honda did most of the lead ing ea rly on, but Kocinski took his firs t turn at running at the front of the grou p on the 10th of 15 laps. On the 11th lap , Mo ri cras hed, leaving Polen all alone in eigh th . On the 14th lap, Picotte ran off in the d o gleg a nd had to lay th e b ik e d o wn before hitting a hay-bale-p rotected ba rrier. When he did so, he fell awkwardly on his sho u lder, breaking a collarbo ne that would kn ock him out of the Dayton a 200, held later in the day. "I just lost the rear end at the exit of th e dogleg and I wen t in to the g rass," Picotte explained . " I came back onto the race tra ck and I tried to brake as hard as I could. There was not eno ugh room and I just put it down before the guard rail and I broke my collarbo ne." The next to go w as the im p ressive Barn es, who crash ed in tum one sta rting the final lap: " I jus t lost the fro nt end ," Barnes said. "I h ad a bit of a throttle glitch and cou ld n' t th rottle up to save it. Th e bike w as running when I we nt over to it, but it stalled when I picked it up. One of th e corner workers was nice enough to give me a bump. I had jus t passed Hale on the brakes - I was getting just abo ut everyone on brakes. In a long. race like this the tires get greasy and it's slip-s liding aro und. I wouldn 't have caug ht him (DuHamel) anyway, I was running about eight seconds behind . He rode a really gre at race and I'm just glad Honda won th e race ." Barnes remounted to fini sh . ninth. Tha t left Crevier to lead Kocinski , Hale an d Zwedorn into the International Horseshoe for the final time . But the run (Opposi te page) Miguel DuHamel was unstoppable in the 600Cc Supersport fi nal at Daytona Inte rnational Speedway. The French Canad ian was able to break clea r from a pursuing pac k to take an easy . victory. (Above) The race for second was intense with Mike Hale (23). John Koc inski (169), Michael Barne s (34) and Steve Crevier (hidden) all go ing for the seco nd spot. (Right) Forme r 250Cc World Champion John Koc inski had his first ride on a 600cc Supersport bike in six years and managed to fhilsh seco nd behind DuHamel. fro m the chican e to the fin ish line was won by Kocinski, w ith Hale, Crevie r and Zwed orn follow ing. " It wa s p retty interesting ou t there," Kocinski said. "It's been a long time since I've raced a 600. I thou gh t I'd wa it un til th e end and mak e my move. That's the way it wo rked out. We we re spinning the tire coming off the com ers and I would n't get the drive I wan ted . I d rove out ofthe chicane and onto the banking and my feet were off the footpegs. I was just trying to hold on and kee p the gas on. I was second out of the chicane behind Crevier. I dra fted a ro u nd hi m an d went rig h t toward s th e wall. I tried to stay away from the tigh t mom ents. It's im portant for me to stay healthy. Thi s wouldn't have been possible without the H onda Mo tor Corporation." "Hell of a battle wasn't it?" Ha le said. "You had to time the d raft really well off the chicane and hope yo u timed it good and nobod y passed yo u on the run to the flag . I placed myself pretty well coming out of the chica ne. I got beh in d Jo hn (Kocinski) and figured 1 mi gh t be able to d raft by h im for second, bu t I came u p just a little bit short." 1":'1 Dayt ona International Speedway Dayt ona Beach, Florida Resu lts: March 12, 1995 600<', QUALIFYING: 1.
