Round 2: Daytona Municipal Stadium ··DIR AC TTR K .AHRMA C laSsic Bike Magazine Dr Series George Rlchtmeyer Jr . topped the Dinosa ur and Modern Vintage 600cc classes during round two of the AHRMA Classic Bike Dirt Track Ser ies at Daytona Municipal Stad ium. DAYfONA BEAGI, FL, MAR. 5 eorge Richtmeyer Jr. was the man of the hour as he flicked his BSA to a pai r of unchall eng ed , wi re-tow ire victories in the Modern Vintage 600 and 750 classes at round tw o of the AHRMA Classic Bik e Magaz ine Dirt Tra ck Series held at Dayton a Municipal Stadium. In the two larger-d isplacement Modem Vintage clas ses, all the action w as behind form er pro dirt tr acker Richtmeyer. The 750 race saw a close battle for seco nd through fifth place among Yamaha rider John Bla ck stock, Triumph-mounted Bill Blackwood, Norton pilot Arnie Mahnke and ano th er Tri. umph-arned rider John Skinne r, but none of.the positions changed before the finish. In the 600 race, Kenny Parker. moved his Yamaha tw o-stroke int o sec- ond after passin g Damon Len gle's BSA following a racelong effort. Parker su rvived an ea rly-race challen g e from Kawasa k i rid e r W illiam New ell to take the Mod em Vintage 250 wi n . Until s p readi ng o u t later in th e fi na l, th ere w as so me close raci ng behind Newell, involving Honda rider Peter Wajd a, Yama ha-mou nt ed John P lu m b and O s s a -e quipp ed Donni e War f. The young vintage dirt tra ck season has been marked by increased int er est in the p re-1968 Classic classes and the pre-'52 Dinosaur d ivi sion, with hands h if te rs, fin e old Tr iu m p hs a n d KR Harl e y-Da vid s ons s howi n g up in greater numbers . And at Daytona, it was these machines that provid ed so me of the best racing action. Former Grand National contend er George Roeder used one of his KRs to win an exciting Classic 500 OHV /750 . . sidevalve fmal on the slippery quartermi le track . Roed er gr abbed the holeshot and ra n h is ol d H-D hard to stay ou t front, while behin d him a battle raged betw een the Tri um phs of John Phillips and Skip Wertz, BSA-mounted Craig Breckon and Rusty Lowry's KR Harley. And despite the best efforts of Phill ips and Wertz, the closely bunched top five finished in that order. N u m ber -o ne - p la te h old e r Ge o rge Wills go t the jump on the Dinosaur field with h is Harle y hand-shifter, and he never relinquished th e lead. The rider on the move, th ough he nev er mo ved too close to Wills, w as Leo Anthon y [r., who ran up to chall en ge and pass second -p lace rider Leo Jovan ovic. ' . Anothe r number-one-plat e h older, Ch ris Bald win, used his Bulta co to reel in and pass early lea de r Danny Ward in th e Cl as si c 250 class . After allowing Baldwin to open up a fairly wide mar- gin, Ward di aled up his BSA and mad e a run at the leader, closin g on Baldwin in the turns, but losing ground again on the straights .
