.SUPERCROSS U .S.Supercross Series "The firs t thi n g to go through my mind ? ' Aw shi t.:" said McGrath. "Dowd's bike came righ t into me, there was nothing I co uld do . Th is is th e o ne su pe rcross track tha t yo u can' t come fro m behind and win on. I ro de as goo d as I could after that, but it was a little hard to get going at first. I so rta had a mid moto lag, b ut I guess las t to s eventh isn 't th at bad." Craig escaped the first-turn excitement with the lead, and was pu rsu ed by Lus k, Hen ry, Hughes. LaRocco an d Kiedrowski. Henry was the first to make a serious move, an d worke d past both Lusk and Craig for the lead on the first lap. Craig dropped to third on lap tw o when Lusk ju m ped pa st h im in the whoops. Lusk carri ed that momentum past Henry as well, and mom entarily inherited the lead on la p three. Henry fo ught back, and passed the young Suzuki rider back only a few tu rns later . . Then, it all began to fall apart for Lusk. "Henry squ ared it off real tight in fron t of me," said Lusk. "We both kinda went off the track. bu t I got banners stuck in my rear wheel. After th at, I had no brakes." Lusk would eventually fade to 13th, but not before momentarily losing control in front of laRocco. "L usk screwed up on a jump in front of me. and that let Kiedrowski sneak by both of us," said laRocco. By lap five, the runnin g order was: He nry, Kied rowski, Lakocco, Lusk and Lamson. "At the start, I saw a Honda rider get ou t fron t and I thought it was McGrath." said Kiedrowski. " I knew that I had to act fast or he'd get away, so I really pushed hard in the first laps. Then I got into second and saw that it was Henry, and then I wasn't so worried ." Kiedrowski stalked Henry and made his mo ve on the six th lap in th e lon g w hoop sectio n b e fore th e fini sh -line jump. From that momen t on, it was relativel y smo ot h sa ili ng for Kiedrowski. Hen ry stayed with him for a few laps, bu t by the race's end, Kiedrows ki enjoyed a 12-second lead . LaRocco struggled with Henry until the 14th lap . " I let Henry hold me up for too long," said laRocco. "I was making a lot of mistakes. I almost fell in the comer before the whoops, then I dorked out and stalled in the comer after the whoops. When I finally go t by Henry , Mike was too far gone." LaRocco passed Hen ry in a multiplejump section, bu t Henry put up a figh t for several more laps before finally dropping back. Eight seco nds se parated laRocco and Hen ry at the checkered flag. Yamaha riders Emig and Ward battled throughout the race for fourth - the tw o were never more than a few bike lengths apart. "Ward took his goggles off towar ds the end when he was in front of me, and that kind of pumped "me up," said Emig. "After I p assed h im , I knew that he'd have a hard time seeing." Ward w as u nha p py with h is fift h - . place finish. "I knew McGrath got screwed up, and I wanted to g ain as many points as possible on hi m, " he sai d . " I ' m not w orried abou t Emig in the points. I shouldn' t have even been dicing with him ." Lam son fin ished a lonely sixth, far behind Ward, yet well ahead of McGrath. "I just wasn't riding well toda y, I'm no t happy," said Lamson. "I got awfully beat up out there. I was just riding tense." Behind McGrath came Decker, Hu ffman and Craig. Decker started ninth and hovered inside the top 10 throughout the race, while Huffman made a notable Round 7: Daytona International Speedway 250 HEAT 3 (25 ri de- 10 laps, to p 5 tra nsfe- 1. rs, r): Jeremy McGrath (H on ); 2.
