(K aw). ------ WEST PAl.M BEACH, FL,FEB. 18-19 Joh n Ashmead and Jam ie Bowm an took th eir con tinuing bat tle for the $1000 Shootout bragging rights to the line for the second time in the last few months d uri ng the Florida Series road races at Moroso Motarsports Park. After a race long battle, Ash mead edged Bo wm a n to th e line by a hundredth of a secand. Ashmead, on his Kawasaki ZX-7R superbike. had ev erything going h is wa y wi th two laps to go on th e 2.25-miIe co u rse. Bowman, doing the chasing on hi s Honda CBR9OORR. figured he would pass on the last lap. but Ash mead managed to make hi s Kawasak i a little wid er in th e co mers , prot ecting the lead. As they approached the start/ finish line Bowman slipped out of Ashmead's draft for a pass. but it was to 'no avai l. " lf I had anothe r 20 feet I would ha ve had hi m," Bowm an sa id . Both riders we re very ca re fu l in this preDay to na warmup, pa infull y aware that it was be tter to be a little cau tious in thi s the first race of the new season than not hav e a wh ole bike to ride at Dayt ona. In th e Sat u rd ay Soja GTO, Bowman too k adv antage of traffic a nd pulled away fro m Ashmead for a convi nci ng win in the 22-lap final. Ashmead just made it to the line in that race as w ell, fendin g o ff a h ard -chargin g Dami an Weber on an ex ~Troy Corser Ducati 955 Superbik e.
