CA,FEB. 26 Nearly every weekend, Harold Smith b rings his son , Chaz, out to the races to compete in the BOcc class. Apparently, Harold Smith was tired of Chaz havi ng all the fun , so he went out bou ght a ne w KTM for himself, and ended up winning both Vet Beginner class motos during Califo rnia Racing Club's Sunday mo tocross at the Los Angeles County Racewa y. Smi th started the fun by getting the holeshot in his first moto. Andy Flu m ran seco nd for a short while befo re being passed by Rick Jurado and Fra nk Pineda. Jurado was ru nni ng in second place an d a patt ern soon developed, with Jura do closi ng in on Smit, as each lap progressed, o nly to h a ve Smith us e a h o t li ne th ro ug h a long sectio n of whoops to pull away again. Sm ith upped the pace on the last couple of laps to pull clear of Jurado, by 10 seconds, when the checkers waved. Pineda stayed within striking d istance of Jurado for th ird . John Sullivan worked up th rou gh the pack to finish fourth ahead of Robert Miller. Jerry Noone won the drag race to the first tu m in moto two, but Smith was already in contro l as they exite d the tum. Jurado, who go t a poor start and was buried at th e back of the pack man aged to work all the way up to fourth with ju s t a la p completed. Jurado conti n ued h is charge up past Pineda and Sullivan and start ed to close in on leader Smith. Jura do had his CR 125 at the back wheel of Smith's KTM 300, but cou ld n' t overcome the hor sepower di sadvan tage to make the pa ss. The two ride rs diced for most of the mo to, u n til Sm it h turn ed up the wick o n the final circuit to secure th e w in . CA,FEB.:5-26 The 1995 American Historic Racing Motorcycle Associ ation (AHRMA) West Region MX Series got u n d e rw a y last weekend, with a record turnout of riders for Tulare Cycle Par k. The 270 entries , co m b ine d with 125 for Saturda y ' s AHRMA Regional IT. made for a full weekend of vinta ge bike competitloriin central California. As usual. promoter gro up Trip le M Racing did a grea t job, which ha s res ult ed in th e increased popularity of the eve nt. Th e IT co u rse, thi s tim e, wa s laid out in more of a traditi onal TT sh a pe than a t pa st events, but wa s quite sm all, which mad e for clos e ra cing. One of the day's closest contest s ca me in th e 250cc Expert class, between John Ha teley and Tim Nash. Hatele y led from th e start, then missed a shift headi ng onto the front straig hta way nea r the mid way poi nt in the 12lap eve nt. This allowed Nash to pull alo ngside, then ba rely squeeze past hea ding into tum one. A few laps later, the tab les were turned. as Nash erred and the two ran sid e by sid e down the straigh t, with Hateley half-a -wheel behind. '"I cou ld feel him rubbing against my side:' Nash said afterward. And I didn't want to tum d own on hi m a nd make him high-si de. So, I went in as deep as I cou ld to give him room so he would n't crash:' That bit of room was enough to allow Hateley through into the lead , and the win. Brian Shives was third , a distance back. Dennis Spence and To m Horton also had a pair of g re a t races in 500cc Expert and 40+ Expe rt, racing all 24 laps within a bike length of each other, trading the lead several tim es. In the e nd , Sp ence ca me out o n top in both main eve nts. The d eb ut of AHRM A's newest mot ocross class, Premier Ultra·Light weight Il, featured 11 machin es, includ in g ex a m p les produced by Hodaka, Rickma n-Zundapp, Van -Tech , Puch , Carabela, CZ and Honda (four-stroke). Interme- . d iate Ken Gerard showed the way in mot o one, leading from start to fin ish over the " Frito Bandito," Rick Doughty, who co mp le me nte d his Mexican-built Carabela with appropriate southof-the-borde r garb. Doughty turned the tables in mot o two, en rou te to takin g th e Expe rt class win . Gera rd was seco nd overall and first Intermediate, w~iJe the Novice victory went to Mike Folen a. In an effort to enco urag e more fem ale riders, the Women 's class finally got a moto a ll to them selves, instead of d odging oth er rid ers constantly . The brainchild of Debbie Poole, the separate race was popula r with the lad ies, who had to wat ch as Debbie Kan e mot or ed her RickmanMontesa to a pair of relativeJy easy wins, taki ng Interm edi ate class honors over Candy Hat clcy.
