Graham's accident
I was extremely saddened to read of
Ricky Graham's co nti nued misfortune
in the " In The Wind H section of the
March 8 issue (Issue #9). I can only hope
tha t his head injuries are not of a permanent na ture, and that he has a full and
speedy recovery.
O ne thi ng was u n clea r from your
coverage, however, and tha t is - was

th is cr is is could have been so easily
averted, it w ould only co mpound the
tragedy of the situation.

Godspeed, Roger
So m e ti mes you jus t like a person . I
ins tinctively liked Roger Hull. He had a
refres hi ng di rectness about him wi tho ut
being unpleasant.
That he was devoted to "anothe r"
brand of motorcycle si m ply d oesn 't
matter. Roger was a brother to a ll
motorcyclists.
Our industry lost a good soul w ith
Roger's passing.

Wanting more Steve
I really enjoyed the interview with Steve
Morehead (HMarathon Man," Issue #8,
March 1). I only wish the interview had
been longer. It 's neat to hear what the
d irt track veterans ha ve to say, and how
they feel about the sport. I'm hoping for
the day that one or more of the veterans
or retired dirt trackers write a book or
give a lengthy in terview. I th ink th ey
could really give some hin ts to up-andomers and other amateurs on th ings
from setup to riding techn iques.
I was tickled to hea r Steve say that if
only d irt track could get broadcast on a
network than' the sport would get more
exposure. I'm glad to hear someone who

I hope Ste v e competes for many
mo re years and it sure would be great if
the people who have helped keep hi m
in the h unt and on the box could get
behind Springer (lay Springsteen) an d
(Terry) Poovey. I'd like to see them on
the right equipment so they could get
up there and mix it up consis tently with
Morehead.
I love seeing the old guys competitive and making a living from dirt track
racing . Most of all I li ke to see th em
doing it and having a ball.

Las t week ' s H Th e Wind H (Iss ue #9,
In
Ma rch 8, 1995 ) mentioned Tho mas
Stevens brea king the lap record at Willow Springs Raceway, a record held by
1993 Form ul a USA Champion Ch uc k
Graves.
T he " In The Wind" piece q uoted
Thom as St ev ens as sayi ng that th ey
wo uld be doing laps in the 1:22 ra nge if
they had a National at Willow Sp rings.
Tom, look at your Cycle News calend ar.
On April 16 th ere w ill be a Formula
USA Na tio na l Championship race at
Willow Springs.
The top Formula USA racers will be
there including Sadowski, Graves, Martin , Quarterley, Oliver, Szarek, Taylor,
and many more. These guys wil l be racing for more money than you race for at
most of your AMA Superbike races .
And I'm sure you're right - they will
be breaking your track record and running lap s in the 1:22 range. That's nearly
a 110 mph average speed. They don't
call Willow Springs the "Fastest Track in
the West" for nothing.

Still more Gateway
I'm writing this letter in hope that I may
enlighten people on what's really going
on in St. Louis. As an ama teur racer, 1
pursu ed road racing on a regional basis
fo r fi ve yea rs. During that time, I've
raced at facilities whe re I wish I would
ha ve brought my picnic basket and fishing pole. I've also raced at tracks wh ere
yo u had to search for a blade of grass.
Indeed, Gateway International Raceway .
needs a facelift, but do you really think
tha t the AMA would not push to. help
that along?
For your informa tio n, GIR is n o t
located in East SI. Louis. While it uses a
Fairmont City: Illinois, mailing address,
it is actually located within the city limits of Madison, llIinois. In any case, it is
a safe place to visit tha t is bo rdered on
two sides by divided high ways an d far
away fro m any residen tial neighborhoods that you may fear. Actu ally, we
feel its loca tion, being only five minutes
from downtow n St. Louis and our rive rfro n t, is an asset that few ve nues can
match.
As for safety concerns, I' ve seen '94
AMA Pro races a t the so-c; lled "traditional tracks" where racers ha ve to pull
in their shoulders to miss the hay ba les
at three-digit speeds. Try making a mistake on the last com er at Road Atlanta.
Aga in, are p eople reall y thi nkin g - or
jus t speaking before thin king?
For ov er 20 years, SI. Lou is has had a
gro up that has been com mitted to the
grow th of mot orcycle road racing. We
have an excellen t safety crew that ha s
been a sked to a ss ist in staffing races
throughout the Midwest this year. I'm
proud to sa y th at I am in my secon d
term as president of the Midwest Cafe
Racers Association (M.C.R.A).
Building Gateway into a motorcyclefriend ly course ha s been our primary
miss ion. With the help of AMA, WERA
and our new owner, we expect great
success and look forward to a long and
bright road racing future in St. Louis.
Our AMA Superbike even t in St. Louis
will be welcomed with open a rms by
many and we are going to do everyth ing possible to make your visit safe
and enjoyable. To Dale Quarterley and
Mike Smith, please call if you have any
questions.
