Darren Hartung w a s b etter than eight seconds back in third. Fourth was decided on the final lap among a handful of riders . Steve Wenner got the nod, about six seconds behind Hartung, w ith Jim Harald son fifth, and Brett Champagn e sixth . Kim ble, Har tung, Ros e, and Josef Brenn er had their final showdown in the Am ateur Mid dl eweight Superbike class, but onl y until Rose came off in the West End Hor sesh oe. Brenner w as the guy who p ut h im th ere, ca tch ing Kimbl e in the ch ica ne and going high on the banking to take the lead at the strip to start the fifth lap . The n Hartung made his move, ge tt ing by Kimbl e at the kink, for second, then into the lead e n te ring the West En d Horseshoe. The pace took the tr io to a nearly seven-second gap on fourth with Champagn e having it to h im self until dropping ou t on the final lap. On th e n e xt -t o -l a st lap, the o rder shifte d again - Kim ble, Brenner, Hartung - but the difference was negligible. Hartung moved up to second out of the infield on the fina l la p, the three riders setting up for. the ru n to the flag. Kimb le emerged th e winner, but only by the width of a tire; Hartung was secon d wit h Brenner third. "I finally wo n one of these th ings," Kimble said. "I've been waiting all da y. I've been close and I finally did it. The y (Ha rtu ng and Brenner) ga ve me too much to think about. 1 already blew the last one (Amateur Middleweight Supersport) and I didn't want to blow this one." "I could have had the win had he (Kimble) not weaved to break the draft," Ha rtung said. "It's a d rafting thing here at Dayton a and I'm su re he knows that."
