MTEG Ultracross Series: Round 2 Lewis lands second win at San Diego By Mike Atk inson Photo by Mark Rayb urn SAN DIEGO, FA, FEB. 25 y wi nning the second round at San Di e g o ' s Ja ck Murp hy S tadium, Noleen / Si zz ler I Yamaha' s Ky le Lewis is qu ickly p roving himself to be the Jerem y McGra th of Ultracross. After taking the cha mpionship from teammate Larry Brooks last year, Lewis ' h as won both main even ts at the tw o opening rounds of the series this year. Lewis' d om ina tio n in Sa n Diego b eg an with th e fi rst h ea t race before 36 ,85 2 fa ns. Lewis a nd Bro oks were lin ed up to g ether o n the s ix th ro w . Le w is' good start pro pell ed h im in to th ird by th e e n d of the firs t la p . Bu t B Brooks was lined u p agains t the wall and got caught in traffic at the start . At th e e n d of th e first lap, he was s till m ired in the middl e of th e p a ck in eigh th . Ja son Mc Co rmi ck and Cory Keeney ba ttled for the lead. Close to the e n d of th e third lap, Lewis pulled a spectacu lar pass on the wh oop s, leapin g beyond both McCormick and Keeney to take first. On the last lap, Lewis had an ex te ns ive lead an d Brooks, w ho h ad worked his way through traffic, passed Keeney at the finish line to capture second . In the se co n d h e at, M ike H ea le y caug h t the hol eshot from the third row and never looked ba ck. Chad Smanjak and Ray Crumb also held fast in second and third for the rest of the heat. In the main event, Brooks started on . t he seventh row a n d Lewi s on the eigh th . Ray Crumb went down in the first tum, taking Brooks with him . In the aftermath, Brooks left the ra ce w ith a broken hand, the status of.his seaso n in questio n . At the e nd of tile first lap , Lewis wa s in se ven th place, w hi le Shawn Wynne and Shaun Perolio led th e pack. Wynn e eventually crashed into a bar rier, amputating a toe off h is left foot. Wynne was rushed to the hospital. and the toe was later su ccessfully reattached. Erick Hilton took over the lead on the second lap an d held it for two lap s. On the fo urt h lap Lewi s, who h ad been methodically picking off riders, passed McCo rmick for second and then Hi lton on the triples for first. Healey h~d also been working his way up the pack, following each of Lewis ' advancements. But he cou ld no t catch Lewis, who had built a sizab le lead. On the seventh lap, Perolio and McCormick passed Hilton to tie up third a nd fo urth places. Crumb came back from the first lap cra sh to finish 11tho I'm con fid en t about th e rest of the season, " Lewis s aid af ter the race . " I have the number-on e plate and a good po ints lead. All I have to do is keep riding the way I've been riding an d I'll come o ut wi th th e championship again." . With the heat an d mai n win s, Lewis takes a command ing 38 point lead in the se ries at 139. He also surpasse d Tyson Voh land' s Ultra cro ss all -tim e main event w in record with 11 victories. Chad Sma nja k is second in the poin ts race wi th 101. Brook's DNF in the main drops him fro m fi rst to th ir d at 91 points. Crumb's main event crash cost h im a place from thi rd to fou rth with 87 points. There were .a couple of firsts at this Ultracross eve nt. MTEG added a triple jump obs tacle jus t for the motorcycles . Even thou gh th ey we re abo u t ha lf the s iz e of Sup e rcros s triples and not placed very well on th e track , it did add so me excitement for the fans. The ot her fi rs t was the addition of Thumpe rs to th e competition. Tracy Asher ro de an ATK 650 four-stroke in the second heat race, but missed qualifying by one place . In other mo torcycle action that night, Maryland 's Amber Hughes easily cap tured her third-straight win in th e four th round of th e MTEG I U .S . Women's MX Tea m Stad ium Series. Curtis Adams was the race leader off the line follo we d by Dean Vin cent and Lance Ho lst. The next lap, he passed Holst on th e ba ck st ra ig h t and pa ssed Vincent go ing through tum eight ad van cing into second. As the front -r unner s sta rted lap four, race leade r Adams was under pressu re as Grav es d rafted him down the front straight Rounding tum one, Graves pa ssed Adams. but tha t hold on the lead was short as Adams retook the lead in turn four. On the seven th lap, the compos ition of the lead ers began to change drastically. First, Vince n t wa s pu sh ed in to fo u r th w h e n h e w as pass ed by the cha rg ing Stem . Simultaneously, Graves slo wed dramati cally and p u lled out of the race wi th tire problems. His departure left Adams with the lead , follo wed by Stem a nd Vincent. Further su rp rises remained as the final lap got und erway when Adais bega n to slow substantially and seem ed to nav e lost power on his mo torcycle. At the sa me time, Ch ris Voelker was applying the th rottle and sudd enly moved past Vincent to take over third. On the back straight, Stem dosed up on Adams an d pa ssed him to take over the lead on the Fastlinc Racing-sponsored Dunlop-sh od Ka wasaki Z X-R. Adams held on to cross the line in second behind Stem. Finishing third was Voelker. In the WSMC /Tom Sera Racin g Form ula Two race, Robbie Dowie gra bbed the holesh ot off the line and led the field going into tu m one . Ken t Kunitsugu was moving up rap id ly on his Dun lop-sh od Yama ha TZ250 and was into thir d as the racers neared the end of the first lap . Determined to take over the lead, Kunitsugu dropped inside of Aragaki in tum eigh t to take ov er second. Dowie wa s next to feel the heat . from Kunitsugu. On the back straight du ring lap tw o.. Ku nitsugu mov ed around th e insi de o f Dowie and b rie fly held the lead . However, Dow ie wasn 't wiJIing to relinq uish the top spo t eas ily and repa ssed Kunitsugu in tu m eight. Kunits ug u paced Dowie th ro ugho ut la p thre and in the secon d tu m of lap four, he once e again passed Dowie to take the lead . The next few laps saw Kunitsugu open a slight ga p on the Dow ie and Ara gaki. The race was red-flagged jus t after the ha lfway point, leaving Kun itsugu with the vic tory.
