Monte Ca rlo, Marc Colomer is ever
closer to repeating his victory in the
FIM Wo rl d Cup of Indoor Trials. The

were quick ly sold ou t, and it was standing roo m only for eve ryone else as they
watched the new Montesa factory rider
romp to his third major victory aboard
his factory Co ta 314.
Six very d ifficult sections greeted the
world's best ride rs, many of who m suffere d mech an ical m iseri es . Fin lan d's
Tommi Ahvala broke the rear brak e on
his factory Fanti c Section, whil e Co lorner su ffered a flat tire and Doug Lam pkin
broke h is Bet a ' s ha ndlebar. Don at o
Migli o's Gas Gas su ffered overheating
problems. For their part , Bruno Camozzi
and [or di Tarr es both took huge tumbles
off the top of the cas tle section.
Brit Steve Colley was th e on ly man
able to kee p Colom er in sigh t. Colom er,
ever on for m, carded th e on ly singledigit loop score of the evening w ith an
eight. Colley was four points back with
12, followe d by new Beta man Camo zz i
wi th 19 and Lampkin w ith 21. Lam pkin
has yet to become a factor in the indoor
eve n ts, th ough h is p articip a tion h as
been steady.
Colom er was aga in the best man on
the night with only one five and a victory agai nst Co lley in th e raci ng sho wdowns.
Colorn er's lead in the Worl d Cu p is
now 141 ove r Tarres, who again failed
to ma ke the transfer to the final. Wit h
on ly th ree rou nds rema ini ng, Colomer's
lead is very cozy.

from a le ss- than-ste llar s tart, ta k in g

Conner wasted no lime in moving to
the fron t of the pack, and he di spl aced
O'Nail by the end of the second lap. Patterson moved past Jon es to hold down
th ird . Terry Cunningh am was also on
the mov e from a slow start to move in to
fifth .

The Cal Poly Pengu ins M,C. pro ved that college
students are capable of more than cra mming for
finals and chugging beer with their annu al HiMou nta in Dua l Spor t Ride, a replacement for the
historic (but now de func t) H i-Mountain Endu ro.
Ov er 100 rid ers left the start on the Calif ornia State Unive rsity ca m pus , crosse d throu gh
town and tu rned onto Perfumo Canyo n Road .
At the top of the hill, the view to the north of
Morro Bay a n d th e Paci fic w as spectac u la r.
Fro m th e su m mi t, r id ers h ead ed do w n See
Canyo n to Pismo. Beach SVRA, north along the
beach at the poste d 15 mph limit to the ex it in
the town of Arroyo Gran de. Many par ticipan ts
sa id they found riding on the bea ch to be a big
thrill. From ther e, they he ad ed northeast pa st
Lopez Lake into the Los Pad res National Forest.
After a qu ick stop at the Pozo Saloon, riders
fou nd themsel ves a t th e ha rd way!.l>asy way
sp lit. Those who chose th e hard way got to experience some of the OHV I motorcycle trails of the
Pin e Mo u nta in a rea of La Panza a n d Bla ck
Mountain. Both the vistas and the rid ing challenges were exhilara ting .

After approximately 30 miles of aggressive
dirt ridin g, most were ready for the road section
th a t foll owed . The rou te wen t n or th w est on
H ig hw ay 58, w it h a n o p t io n to t ry out a
motocross track. Pa rticipa nts then turned onto
La Panza Road for a short pavemen t sectio n to
ano ther bit of p rivately ow ned land. The hard
way offered a very tigh t single-track trail. After
seven miles, many were hungry for the ba rbecue
and were read y to view the mountains atop the
grassy hill.
The road back to Ca l Poly wa s unev entful,
aside fro m th e rid e d own Qu esta G ra de on
Stagecoach Road .' After 155 mil es of aw esome
ridin g, the campu s was a welcome sight.

father Rober t, wa s also in fine form. The elder
Rey na rd finish ed 1-2 for seco n d overall in the
35+~ cla ss . Robert looked stro ng w ith a first-mote
win, but he cou ld n' t ho ld off overa ll winner Truitt Rogers in moto two .

Lead by example seemed to be Mini Ou tlaw
winner Johnny Madey's theme for the day. Marley showed the compe tition textbook form and
blazin g speed as he reeled in the overa ll victory .

Baker in the 250cc Intermed iate class. Baker left
the competition beh ind as he motored to take
the checkered flag twice for the overall victory.
