, Loves everyone
Ninteen ninety-four has been a year of
fulfilled dreams. In an y avenue of life,
there are going to be times of pain and
suffering. but as humans, we ha ve to be
strong. and feel like we're made of steel.
Through sheer drive and determination
we can achieve new heights. We don't
know our limits until we push to total
exhaustion; once we are there we must
reach into our hearts and push beyond!
Becoming National Enduro Champion is a feeling I will never forget. I gave
all my heart and soul at each practice,
train ing session and race. If I had come
up short, I didn't want to feel like I cou ld
have tried harder. We all need to strive
to be the best that we can be, and feel
completely satisfied wi th our actions . All
you can give, is all you can have.
I wou ld like to say tha nk yo u to each
and everyone of you out the re who
helpe d touch my life in one way or
another. I will ha ve th e number-one
pla te on m y wall, but it was all of you
tha t he lp ed me earn it. Thanks to m y
awesome family for always being supportive a nd caring, m y friends who
have alw ays stood by me, my sponso rs
and m y mechanics, Joe She dron, Dan
Fuller and Ray Davis.
Lastly, I w ould like to sa y, "grea t
job" to m y Suzuki teammates, Randy
Hawkins, ROdney Smith and Guy Cooper. With friends like this, you can't lose.
Also, thanks to Mik e Webb and everyone at Suzuki, and to all of the motorcycle press. Keep up the awesome work!
Hope to see all of you at the races in '95!

Not the bad guy
I would like to take a moment to set the
record straigh t using fact-based accounts
in regard to my gelling the so-called
boot from KTM before I ever had th e
opportunity to swing a leg ove r a bike.
In late Novem ber, the Ame rican KTM
race team (RRP) manager (Mike Rossini)
conta cted me to negotiate a deal to ride
for KTM. At that t im e I had alread y
signed a v e ry good dea l w ith Ron
Rehmert at F&S Racing to ride factorybacked Suzukis for the '95 season, but
obviously I was totally w ired about an
America's weekly motorcycle newspaper
opportunity to be a factory rider, which
is ev ery racer's dream. I was offered a
verbal agreement at which time I carefully evaluated all of the pluses and minuses to determine the best options for
career advancement and financial opportunities since the comparisons were very
close at this tim e. I chose to pursue my
dream with KTM, but Mike Rossini ind icated that I must void my contract with
F&S before I could receive a written contract from KTM, reflecting our p rior verbal agreement. In good faith, I obliged
with the appreciated understanding of
F&S, and at this time KTM released.press
bulletins of the agree ment. It then took
three weeks to receive a written contract
to sign. But to my dismay it was nothing
like our ve rbal discussions - it was less
than one-third of what I based my decisions on.
When I called on the misunderstanding I was accused of having a bad atti tu d e, comp lain ing about technica lities
and who was I to question a factory contract, which wa s in reality, nothing more
than a support-rider b ased contract.
Well, ob viously, I declined and now I
have been made ou t to be the bad guy
when actually I was.just trying to stand
up for what was offered to me. To say
the leas t it was a very expensive lesson
learned, one I will carry with me for life.
Bu t for now, because of the lateness of
these transa ctions, I was forced to buy
my own bikes and head to Florida to try
and earn a living the hard wa y. Thanks
to the support of my long time spo nsors
I will continue on and maybe someday I
will be able to ac h ieve the dream of
being a facto ry rider. Thank you Performance Engineering. Xtreme, Shoei Helmets, Smith Goggles and FMF Racing .

Miss Stea ks
You made a mi stake in reporting the
mistake I made at the Seattle Supercross.
My mistake was calling Damon Huffman, Dam on Bradshaw. Your mistake,
in reportin g my mistake, was mistaking
Jeff Emig for Damon H uffman.
You'll ha v e a week to think up a
clever retort to m y mistake in bringing
y o u r mi stake to yo u r attention. It ' s
always a mistake to point ou t mistakes to
ed itors, and I have now made that mistake, in addition to the Huffman/Brad-
shaw mistake, and in years p ast , m ultitudes of similar mistakes.
Desp ite your mistake in reporting my
mis take, I continue to regard Cycle News
as the bes t so urce of racing informati on
in the industry. Make no mistake abo u t
tha t.

I attended the San Diego Supercross last
Saturday night, and in thi s week 's ed ition of Cycle News (Issue #7, January 22),
your coverage in the "Briefly..." section
m a k es re ference to the fan s b o o in g
Frenchman Fred eric Bolley after his victory in the second 250cc semi.
I was silting in the stands beh ind
Larry Maiers an d the podium and saw
what actu ally ha p p e n ed . Ju st a t the
moment tha t Bolley stepped up on the
podium and Maiers announced his victory, one of the us hers grabbed a beach
ball tha t the fans had bee n punching in
the stands just near my seat. When the
u sher grabbed the b a ll a nd b egan to
d eflat e it, all of th e fans began booing
th e ushe r. Unfortunately, it so u n d ed
like the booing was directed at Bolley.
Larry Maiers looked over his shoulder
a n d w as quick t o figure o ut that the
booing was d irected at the usher and he
made a comment to Be lley, althoug h I'm
not sure if Bolley understood. The b0Ding at the usher was pretty loud because
the fans were rowdy in my section.
I wanted to write to clarify this fact in
the ho pe that the real reason for the b0Ding is conveyed to Frederic Bolley. The
fans all enjoyed his victory in the semi
and have nothing but respect for his skill
and determination in coming over to race
in the States. He beat quite a few good
American riders in his heat and deserves
the acknowledgment of his achievement.
Hopefully, he will return to San Diego
next year for the cheering he deserves.
