from 5-8 starts, and 12Sec World Champion Bob Moore, equally collected from
furt her back as he finished 4-5.
But the American, in training aga in
fo r ju st one week aft er rebreaking a
bone in his ankle during a su pe rcross
race in December and still hobbling off
the bike, decid ed to sit ou t the fin al
moto, and Everts was out of the race at
the seco nd comer w hen he crashed to
the ground after makin g con tact with
Nicoll.
Puzar had missed the gate this time,
but Vohland was also back in the pack.
Werner Dewit had pulled across him
halfway up the s tart straigh t and was
thankful for his pre-race points lead. By
mid-mote he was seventh and could
quite literally see that that was going to
be enough because' Puzar was right
ahead of him in sixth.
By the finish the Italian, whose career
had been in the doldrums at the end of
'94, was fourth. "I have a new team and
a new motivation," said Puzar. "I had a
brake problem in race two ." But Tallon
was sixth after a sweet, late pass on the
errant Dewit.
Nicoll w as ag ai n secon d after an
aggressive charge up th e leaderboard,
bu t he could n't catch Peter Beirer, th e
German who is moving from the 125s to
th e 250cc GPs a nd from Su zu ki to a
Honda dealer team this year . "I was n't
aggressive en oug h ear ly on in the first
two races, but I already proved I had
the speed to catch up the leading pack
each tim e," said Beirer. "When I ga ted
second to Dew it in the final I went for
. it."
Moore's tw o motos we re eno ugh to
g ive him seventh bes t to tal sco re and
th e other two American s at the race Bader Manneh and Jimm y Button - also
finished in the top 10 overall classification.
Button wa s not happy with Beirer.
"H ow can you look over your sho ulde r,
see that someone is there and pull across
the track?" Button asked . "Tha t is what
he did to me in the second moto."
Th e American' s s ta r ts w e r e h is
downfall in the first tw o races. "That's
just a stocker I'm riding toda y,"
explained Butto n. "Those other guys are
outpowering me all the way up the hill
from the start." But all worked well in
race three and he started third, only to
fall victim to Nicoll, Bervoets and Puzar.
Manneh is another still looking for
his starts. 'They' ll come," said Manneh.
"It's all down to practice." A good sign
for the future was his ability to ad vance
forward when necessary.
Yves Demaria had been erratic on his
Yamaha debut. His pass on Nicoll came
in a charge from ninth to fourth in the
opener, but then he got the big triple
awfully wrong and almost ended up in
the crowd. Concussion forced him to sit
out the rest of the program.
So an American had once again won
the first big race of the European season,
but Vohland must also carry with him
the kn owledge that no one has ever won
Beaucaire and a world title in the same
year.
