125cc The I5-lap I25cc feature was easily the most exciting race of the night, and the excitement commenced when Ryan Hughes powered hi s Team SplitFire / Pro Circuit / Kawasaki KXI25 into the lead, but right behind him was Suzuki's D a m o n H uffman, wh o h adn't lo st a West Coas t I25cc main event yet. But Huffm an had a miserable first lap and dropped to sixth by the tim e it wa s com pleted. Sandwiched in between H ughes an d Huffm an w ere Fr ederic Via li e , Craig Deck er, Da vid Pin g ree and Cory Keeney. ' "1 thou ght I had a good start - abo ut second - but the first cou p le of lap s were cra zy," sa id H uffman. "People we re hitting me and 1 almost went d own. Th ere wa s d efinitel y a lot of pu shin g a n d shoving going on." Huffman didn't ha ve much trouble getting around Keeney - which he did on the second lap - but had a hard tim e ge tt ing a wheel in on Pingree. Fo r th e next four laps, Huffman see med stuck in fifth pl ace, all the w hile making obvious mistak es on th e track. "Yeah, I just cou ld n't ge t going and was makin g m ist ak es," said Huffman. " Bu t I kn ew I h ad tim e to ge t m y ac t together ." . Lu ckil y for H uffman, Hughes just could n't break loose fro m th e five-rider freight train, and wasn't pulling away. Finally, on the fifth lap, Huffman cu t underneath Pingree in a tum for fourth. A lap later, he made a similar maneu ver on his teammate Decker for third. Decker, however, retaliat ed and tried p assing him b a ck . " I s ho wed him m y fr ont wheel ther e," said Decker . "I was hanging wi th him but made a couple of mistakes and th at was it." On th e next lap, both Huffman and Decker s ho t b y Vi a lle, w ho lost his rh ythm through a section of jumps. At the halfway point, Huffman was in se cond place and pressuring Hughes, but th e Kawa s aki rid er w as n ' t going to give an inch. For the next five lap s , th e two rid ers pl a y ed cat "n ' mouse until Huffman saw hi s chance in a multiple jump section . Huffman changed lines and took H ughes by surprise. " He (H u ffman) came in fast," said Hughes . " I co ul d 've blocked h im but :th at wou ld've tak en u s both o ut, and that would 've been stu p id. I just left th e door a little ope n for him." With four la ps remaining, Huffman gradually p ulled away from Hughes to sco re his third straight win of the series. H e'll be taking his perfect record into San Diego next week. " I knew I had time: ' said Huffm an, " a n d I did n ' t want to d o anything dumb. I was making a lot of mistakes at fi rst a n d th en I fi nally go t goi ng . Tonight was the bes t I've seen Rya n ride all season." " I had a better start this time:' sai d Hughes. "So me sectio ns he (H u ffman) rode better, and there were some I rode better . But I tak e my hat off to Damon; he rod e real good tonight." For th e second week in a ro w, Decker finish ed a stro ng th ird. " I just have to be more aggressive at firs t and try to ge t away from those guys:' said Decker . "I made some mistakes and it took a while to get my rh ythm." . Finishing fou rth after sta rting off in seco nd w as Vialle, while Pingree rounde d out the top five. C ha d P ed ers on cl imb ed fro m eigh th t o six th, w hi le N CY / PrimaI Impulse /Yamaha's Pedro GonzeIez finishe d seventh .
