Thank you The IV quest io n If the sport of American motocross has a problem, it could be helped by not portra ying Dou g Henry as a "Willie Horton" in what is probably the widestread motorcycling/racing publication in North Ame rica. I am not a fan of Mr. Henry's bu t I recogn ize his name and his accomplish ments. Man y racers could help themse lves and the sport by represe n ti ng the mselves as well as Doug . I fee l that Dave y Coombs' conjectu re (" Race r X," Issue #2, January 18) helps to for m a s tory to feed what he may feel is the reading public's need for se nsationa lism. Twice he portrayed Doug as "a rid er w ith a needle in his arm." In this article the author has successfully associated a top -line racer having a med ical condi tion with supervised treatmen t to the stereotypical "street junkie." Fear an d loathing... This is a commonly accepted medica l practice, not an "extraordinary" medica l procedure as sta ted in the column. Who has never ha d a friend or relative in a hospital taking fluid and nutrients from an "i.v, d rip?" Would the m ethod of ad mi nistration be more palatable if it were in pi ll form or sipped through a straw? Bolstering the story with an unquoted stateme nt fro m one team manager stating that he would be " forced to hire a trainer to administer similar fluids to the riders on his tea m" - can we then assume that he also would have to force his ride rs to have the identical meal that the las t race winner had prior to the . race? Do these types of statements shed favorable light up on team management? C heap shot? O r easy target? The problem lies in which ar e acceptable medical practices and procedures and which are unaccep table - not that Doug is trea ting a med ical condition. Let's keep ou r points clear. As Henry sta tes : "I would trade places with anybody." Bob Rams ay Granville, OH According to Coombs, the purpose of the column was not to be sensational or to pass judgement, but to provide factual information on a current issue affecting motocross. The reference to the needle was fi rst overheard during a November A MA advisory board meeting. Coombs adds that as a professional, there is no rider that he respects more than Henry...Editor The MotoWorld blues On Au g u s t 12, 1994, our daugh te r Becky, 14, was critically injured during the am ateur MX races in Washougal, Washington, when a motorcycle left the track and hit several specta tors. The medics ' quick response and their expe rtise saved her life; thank God for the talents of these p rofessionals, we are very gra teful for them. Becky was ta ken by Life flig ht to a trauma unit in Por tla nd, where s he remained in a coma for two wee ks after s us tain ing a severe traum atic bra in inju ry. She then moved to a rehabilitation facili ty where s he mad e good progress and was released on Sep tember 12. She is now at home d oing therapy and is ge tting so me much need ed rest. On October 8, 1994, the family was anxious to go back to the races and get back to no rma l. Dave (O ld Tim er Exper t) and Kevin, 16, (125 Interm ed iate) like to hel p a t Woodla nd MX Park and wanted to race . They ta lked about taking it easy , bu t un fortuna tely on the second lap of Ke v in ' s race he crashed hard, was u nconscious and wa s taken by Lifeflig ht with a severe TBI also . Kevin was in a coma for five days and was released on November 18 from the hospital - he' s now b ac k at school and goi ng to thera p y twice a week . Both kids are making good p rogress and Kevin's therapist says he's motivated and wa n ts to race next year. We thank God for his recovery, and for all of your prayers. We would like to thank e ve ryone at Washouga l, Woodl a nd , Portland International Raceway and the Alban y Su pe rcross for everyt hing they 've done for us. We wo uld also like to thank the pros, the factory teams and sponsors, th e man y mot orcycle sho ps and clubs, our friends and fellow MXers and the many spec tators. We want tt' thank you all. not just for what you did, bu t also for the warmth, ca ring and con cern yo u s howed us . Receiving ca rds, d on ations a nd yo u r prayers from all over th e coun try has touched our hearts deeply. Getti ng the mail was the highlight of their recovery. Thank you for your help , patience and kindness. I pray that God will bless your lives in return . We ca n 't than k you enough. Dave and Janet Eakin Portland, OR For the last six m on ths I have bee n working weekends, so I ha ven ' t been able to watch Mo toWorld at its 11:30 p.m, air time . This weeke nd I was free an d looking forward to MotoWorld and the Super Bowl. At 11:00 p.m. I started m aking popcorn , mad e su re the ki d s were asleep, kissed the wife good night, then settl ed in my favori te chair in great anticipation of MotoWorld. Then it happened - my worst fea rs had come to life. What happened to Dave? Art Eckman and som e little weenie were h osting MotoWorld . The y showed half the su percross coverage I remember, a n d mostl y s h o we d Art crashing into a tree. I alwa ys thought of MotoWorld as a show where I could get all the latest race results - not to watch th e MotoWorld s ta ff ta ke up 'valuable ai r time that could be used to cover a race. The next morn ing my wife woke me up from a d eep sleep in my favorit e chair. When I told her w ha t had happened ; she assured me it was all a bad d ream and that Dave Despain would be back next weekend . I su re hope so. Robert J. Morello San Mateo, CA We're hapT'!! to report that both Bccky and Kevin Eakin attended their fi rst day of school since thei r accidents, on Jan uary 30... Editor MotoWorld is now being hosted by Art Eckman and Bob Varsha...Editor Go Jimmy Let m e be t he first to co ng ratu late Jimmy Filice on ge tti ng a ride on th e Padget ts Yam aha team fo r th e 1995 500cc World Championship Series.
