Godspeed, Lance
I would like to take this opportunity to
sa y good by e to a close friend, Lance
Burgess. Lance w as the n icest, most
generous person you could eve r meet.
He wa s very devoted to his wife Teresa
and young daughters Linsey and Whitney. Lance had worked ve ry hard to
realize his d ream of riding the Nationals, and he finally fulfilled that dream
la st yea r w hen h e compe ted in the
500cc class alon g with his best friend,
Dana Bray, who turned wrenches for
him.
. Lance had raced motocross for most
of his 33 years and he was loo king forwa r d .to h el pin g so me of the loca l
youngsters race. His wife told me tha t
in h is earlier years I had insp ired him
wit h my racin g success, but I kno w in
his la ter yea rs he ins pired me to be a
better p erson and husband . He su re
will be missed.
.
Lance was killed by a worthless car
th ief in the San Francisco area on his
wa y io the AMA Awards Banquet in
Sou thern California. Memorial con tri butions can be made to the Linsey and
Whi tney Burgess Fund, c/o Coast Central Credit Unio n, 2650 Harrison Ave.,

absolute bes t flat track fun da y in my
52 years. It was a great day. At anyone
time, there were 18 to 29 riders on the
Willow Springs (Californi a) d irt tra ck
and 40-60 riders waiting on the apron
for their turn.
Th e tra ck was perfect - yo u cou ld
ride inside or outside all da y long. Sliding was th e order of the d a y. Th e re
were m ore nifty o ld Triumphs and
BSAs than I ever knew were in captivity - everythin g from XR750s to KRs to
WRs, 1000cc BMWs to 100Rs and plenty of Rotax's, Yamahas and Hondas ,
too. A very fun day.

sport. We are always thrilled to see an
article or a ny info rma tion you print.
Trials is such an enjoyable sport, but a
lot of people do not know what it is.
Through your sup port, we hope more

Where~s the' book?
I' ve been a subscr iber for yea rs and
really apprecia te the amo unt of coverage devoted to dirt track racing. In a
previous issue, you wrote that Joe Scalzo wa s doin g a book on 1970s era d irt
track. Ha s this been published or is a
date scheduled yet?
I'm eagerly awaiting any Scalzo d irt
track stories. Also, co uld yo u please
print the address of ESPN to comment
on the high quality of Gra nd National
Dirt Track co verage as well as
Mo toWorld . I can rem e mb er in the
ea rly 70s waiting m onths to see a
motocross on Wide World of Sports (if
you d id n ' t s leep th ro ugh the figure
ska ting fir st ). We're spoiled with TV
cov erage tod ay and need to let ESPN
(and TNN) know so we don't lose it.

Joe Scalzo says a dirt track book is one of
several projects he would like to produce.
At the moment, he's loolcing for a publisher
that's also interested. Stay tuned to Cycle
News for more of Scalzo as the ye11r progresses. We run everything he sends us.
You're right about the amount of television
coverage now, yet we still get complaints
that it's not enough. As far as the addresses
for ESPN and TNN, please see the letter
above titled "l want my M/C TV ."...Editor.
Wanting Ricky
I wa nt to be th e first to congra tulate
Scott Par ker for winn ing #6 in '95. With
teammate Chris Carr go ing road racing , Park er should make history again
by winning all the AMA Nationals in
1995.
I can on ly see one possible p roblem
Pa rker could ha ve in wi n ning all the
'95 Nationals - Ricky Graham. If Ricky
comes bac k wearing his '93 race face,
the '95 seaso n could be exciting.
