For Italian mo tocross enthus iasts, the Genoa Supercross is a season-end ing classic. The locals jump at the chance to see th e bes t riders from the United States and Europe goi ng head to head . With such formid able past participants as Joh nny O ' Ma ra , Rick Johnson , Jeff Ward, Danny Chand ler, David Bailey, Bro c Glover, Geo rges [obe, Pekk a Vehkonen, Allessa nd ro Puza r, Tram pas Par ker, Eric Ceboers, Da vey Strijbos, Bob Moore and others, the exciteme nt is for goo d reason. Vario us organizational problems had p revented the race from taking place for the past two yea rs, but this tim e - thanks to the org anizationa l efforts of the Versilia M.e. - it ma de a return to its previous sp lendor. The obv ious favorite goi ng in to the Ora ce , Team H ond a I l- BO Co lle cr s McGrath consi st entl y pull ed th e holesh ot, and emerged victorio us fro m any battl es that came his way . Riding w ith d e te rminati on o n th e John Savitski-designed track, McGrath - d istan ced h imse lf from his adversa ries with ease, worrying more about the task at hand than performing crowd-pleas ing antics. He was especially impressive in Sunday's final. Mike laRocco was the only ride r that had a chance of impeding th e cha mp, b u t th e Team Kaw asaki rider suffered typical poor starts and th us ha d to be hap py with a second -place and a. third p lace finish. Team Noleen I Siz z le r I Yamaha's Larry Ward is an old favori te with the Palazzetto public, and has tradi tionally finished his Seasons in Eu rope. Ward compo rted himself well in Genoa, turning in fourth- and second -place finishes over the two nigh ts of racing.
