DEC. 10 Greg Schne ll topped an all-star field of pro riders durin g the final rou nd of th e GFI "Dealers Series " at Perris Raceway. Suzuki support rid er Schnell pulled the holes-ho t in th e opening 125cc Pro race with Sp litFire /Pro Circuit-backed Dave Pingree hot on his hl.els in second. ' French man an d h e a vy favorite Michael Picho n had probl ems at the start a nd rounded the first tum ou tside the top 10. Also suffering a poor start was former top-ranked amateu r rider Kevin Windham, who circled the first lap in 14th position. As the race p rogressed, both Sch nell a nd Pingree pulled away from the pack and engaged in a private battle for the lead . Pichon e\'entually worked up to third but wa s 14 seco nd s behind the leaders. Windham a ppeared to be having diff iculty adju sting to his new Yam ahas and slid out in the ba ck sect io n o f th e ra ce t ra ck . He w o uld rem ount and race back to finish a d isappointing seventh by the en d of the mota. Meanwhile, Schnell eventually broke free from Pingree and opened a safe mar gin, which he maint a ined for the first -mote win . Pin gree crossed the finish line seco nd. followed by Mike Chamberlain. Stev e Antirich a nd Scott Sheak. Picho n fell victim to en gine troubl e late in the . race and po sted a Dl\.'F. The second mota saw a rep eat holeshot by Schne ll whi le Pichon, Don Upton. Pingree and Mol' Gandara funnelled in behi nd him. Thi s time Sch nell 's lead was short- lived , as Pichon took over by lap two . From tha t point forw ard Picho n inc hed awa y to an eventual l a-second lead . W indham wa s im p ress ive in the seco n d mota . After a ninth -pla ce star t, he passed a number of top riders en route to an eventua l fourthplace finish . Windham was the only Pro rider to tum two off-camber jum ps into one completely side ways double ju mp. Pichon went on for an un cont ested seco ndmot o victory while Schnell, Pin gree , Win dham and Cha mbe rlain rou nded out the top five. The 125cc Intermed iate class featured a flood of former Mi n i Expert ra cers, incl uding Jiri Dostal, Doug Parsons, jerry Alema n. josh Tara ntino and Andy Harrington, mixing it up wit h the more es tablis he d 125cc Intermediate ri d ers, making for two excitement-filled races. In the end, Veteran Intermediate racer Tyler King was the winner, whil e Dostal, Ryan Ragla nd , Harrington and Eric Schnell round ed the top five overall. Results ---50 (~) STK: 1. Pro motions combined their efforts to bring indoo r flat t ra ck ra cing to th e H ubert H . H u mphre y Metrodorne. With a total of 335 class en trants, 81 preliminary races were run to decide the race order for the finals. Unfortu nately, the program ran past its allotted time limit, and the races had to be cancelled . Riders in most classes recei ved aw ards by e virtue of their heat race resul ts, bu t th re classes we re selected to run finals along with the following eveni ng's Monster Truck show. Bob Yberna was out front at the sta rt of the 600c c Pr o main even t, b ut a crash invo lv ing Wild Card Pro cla ss entrant I.R. Schnabel and Mark Komely b rought ou t the red flag . Beyer made the mos t of the restart and grabbed th e holeshot a hea d of Sch nabe l. D ure lle, Eric Brouha rd. Randy Tripl ett an d the rest of the lOman fie ld . The bigges t surprise of the day came in the seco nd moto whe n seven-yea r-old Rusty Wells grabbed the ho lesho t. Wells held the lead until Vila nd ry and Nic k O rona slip pe d p ast whe n We lls bobb led in a co rner. Bull et Cycles-supporte d David johnson mana ged to tra ck Wells dow n on the last lap and make a pa ss to tak e third for the day.
