O lson took command of both legs in the ea rly stages and went on unchallenged throughout the eight-lap motos. Run ne r up in bo th mo tos was helm et painter George Kohler, who was able to ou tdistance Pro Valve's Nick Cos tello and White Bros.' Tom Whi te, wh o battl ed over th ird. White go t the nod over Costello in the first mota, but after tweak ing on his sus pensio n in between motes, Costello was able to find the extra edge needed to top White and eam third overall. The younger Olson , meanwhile, made quick work of th e 125cc Ju n io r class. Th e Suzu kimount ed speed ster ripped into the lead ear ly in the fi rs t mot a and a fte r a brief battle wi th Ho nda-mou n ted Mann y Arias, cruised ac ross the finish line wit h the w in. Th e second moto saw a star t-to-finish romp by Olson, as he took the lead on the first lap and was never serio usly challenged. John Nelson stayed withi n striking distance, but was forced to settle fa r secon d at the checkered flag. Eberly Surfboards-sponsored Colin Eberly earned second overa ll with consistent 3-3 mota finishes. "A lot of people are compa ring h im to Ba yle, but he is a long way fr.om that speed." DeCoster, who came with his son, Kitch, a 125cc beg i~ ner racer, ma y h a ve changed his mind after viewing the first 125/ 250cc Pro race. Pichon start ed the first Pro moto in about seventh place behind many top local pros, includ ing Greg Schnell. Mike Cha mberlain and moto leader Don Upton. Pichon picked off riders one at a time unti l there were no ne left to pass. Once into the lead, Pichon pulled away to a nine-second advantage, then went on to the checkered flag to the de light of his dad Allen and girlfriend Stephanie. The next rid er to cross th e finis h lin e was Chambe rlain with Schnell and Up ton rounding the top four . The second moto saw Cham berlain ou t fron t for the first two laps before Pichon cut under him to take the lead . Like the first moto, Pichon put distan ce betwt..'Cn him self and his pu rsuers at the . rate of one second per lap u ntil he was well out of sight. Spee dway racer Ran dy Skin ne r took time out to do some cross-trai ning on his motocross machin e and topped the Vet Interm ed iate class. Skinner mi xed it up w it h Ton y .Spear , Dave Ivory and Carl Gazaly during both motos, but in the end, Skinner found himself well ou t in front for a doubl e moto swee p of the class. Mark Raybon looked as though he wo uld wra p up the 30+ Novice title when his arch rival and point leader Pat terson 's Ho nda caug ht fire on the star ting line w h ile waiti ng fo r the gate to d rop . The machine blazed for at least 30 seconds, as everyone scat tered fearing for their lives. The sta rter held up the event while Patterson d umped two squa re ya rds of d irt on the bike . Altho ugh he DNFed the first moto, Pallerson raced the slightly charned Hond a to a second-place finish in the final moto and earned enough pointe; to take the title. The 40+ Novice class had Lawrence Lucia and Bobby Guilbeau tied on points with Lucia getting the overall based on more first-place finishes. Terry Gerber took six wins in six tries to win the wom en 's title. Th e 250cc Expert and 30+ Expert classes wen t down to a last-more face-off bet ween Paul Burnett and Rick Humphreys. Burnell won both fir st motes, wh ich le ft th e titl e chase tied . Whomever won the seco nd mot os would win both titles. Humphreys du g deep to ward off the pa in from last week's crash wounds and used his Vin tage Husky-p repped 250CR to holeshot both starts and lead wire to wire to wi n both titles.
